Its age and hardware capabilities will dictate what you can and can\u2019t do.\u00a0The best way to find out for sure is to search for your model on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\">Apple Support<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<p>For example, searching for a \u201c15-inch 2016 MacBook Pro\u201d yields technical specifications for the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/kb\/SP749?viewlocale=en_US&amp;locale=en_US\">base 2016 model<\/a>. Under the \u201cVideo Support\u201d section, it states this model supports two external displays with a resolution of 5120 x 2880 at 60Hz, or four displays with a resolution of 4096 x 2304.<\/p>\n<p>You can use the same method to understand how to connect any external monitor to your MacBook. You can even specify alternative keyboard layouts, like British English or Japanese, at checkout if you prefer.<\/p>\n<p>While Apple makes a solid keyboard, there are plenty of other options out there. Almost any USB or wireless keyboard (RF or Bluetooth) should work with your Mac. You can also use apps like Karabiner-Elements to customize your keyboard layout. This also means you can remap keys\u2014like the Windows Alt key to Command\u2014so you can use them on a Mac.<\/p>\n<p>Mechanical keyboards are also a solid option. Although frequently marketed for gamers, these are ideal for anyone who spends a lot of their day typing. Do your research so you understand how mechanical keyboards differ from the standard membrane design. Solid-state drives (SSDs) are fast and durable, but they\u2019re still fairly expensive compared to mechanical hard drives. If you want your MacBook to pull double duty as a desktop, you\u2019re likely going to need some sort of external storage.<\/p>\n<p>This could be something as simple as a single USB-attached hard drive. The drive can be used to back up your Mac with Time Machine and store personal data. If you have the cash, though, you can opt for an external SSD. It\u2019ll give you much faster read and write speeds.<\/p>\n<p>For something a little more robust, consider investing in a proper storage solution. Purpose-built RAID enclosures sit on your desk and provide a huge amount of flexibility. RAID allows you to map several external hard drives in a variety of ways, including as a single volume or mirrored backup. A lot of hubs are designed with portability in mind, while others function more as docking stations on your desk.<\/p>\n<p>Docks really shine when they\u2019re used as a single point of connection for all your desk peripherals. If you connect all monitors, storage devices, and other peripherals to a dock, you can simply connect your MacBook to a hub or docking station when you get home, and voil\u00e0: desktop!<\/p>\n<p>Portable hubs are cheap, provide limited expansion, and take up very little room on your desk.
