\n Google CEO Sundar Pichai has credited the company\u2019s transparency for the backlash over the firing of Timnit Gebru, earning a withering rebuke from the\u00a0AI ethicist.<\/p>\n

Gebru\u2019s controversial exit sparked an outcry about diversity and ethics at the company that shows no signs of abating.<\/p>\n

The influential computer scientist lost her job in December after a dispute over a research paper she co-authored.<\/p>\n

Pichai had tried to quell the outrage by apologizing for her departure causing staff \u201cto question their place at Google.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday at\u00a0the World Economic Forum\u2019s annual meeting, he said<\/a> the dispute had attracted so much attention due to Google\u2019s high levels of transparency:<\/p>\n

We are a lot more transparent than most other companies, and so you do see us in the middle of these issues. But I take it as a sign that we allow for\u00a0debate to happ<\/a>en around this area. And we need to get better as a company, we are committed to doing so, but I look at the state of how we approach this and I am confident about the effort we are putting into it and our commitment to do better here over time.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Gebru chastised his comments in a series<\/a> of tweets. She called Pichai \u201ca leader in gaslighting\u201d and accused the company\u2019s leadership team of creating \u201chostile work environments.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Pichai\u2019s praise of Google\u2019s transparency sounds more like spin than substance, he\u2019s correct that the dispute has become unusually public. But that\u2019s almost certainly due to growing internal dissent about diversity and ethics at Google.<\/p>\n

Gebru has become a powerful symbol of the discontent, which will likely rumble on for many months to come.<\/p>\n
