At least 15\u00a0giant sequoias at\u00a0Yosemite National Park<\/a>\u00a0have been toppled following a \u201cMono wind event<\/a>\u201d last week\u00a0that produced gusts estimated at 80 to 100 mph, according to a report.<\/p>\n

Park spokesman Scott Gediman said the event that started\u00a0on Jan. 18 caused what he asserted to be \u201cthe most damage\u201d in its recorded history \u2014 with repairs possibly costing upward\u00a0of $200 million.<\/p>\n

Photos taken by the park and posted on social media<\/a>\u00a0captured the devastation. The park\u2019s Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias, and hundreds of other trees were uprooted, with some falling on structures and homes, officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And that was only the beginning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more damage happ<\/a>ening, too,\u201d Gediman\u00a0told the Los Angeles Times<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve got heavy snow falling and snow accumulations in the trees and that\u2019s causing tree failures\u2026. One fell on a ranger\u2019s house in the valley.\u201d<\/p>\n

The park will remain closed until Monday as a result of the ongoing winter storm that caused more than 18 inches of snow to fall in the\u00a0Yosemite Valley area \u2014 following the fierce winds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHeavy, wet snow has caused trees and branches to fall throughout the park, causing damage to park facilities and vehicles,\u201d the park wrote on its Facebook account.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Mariposa Grove contains about 500 mature giant sequoias. They are the\u00a0third \u201clongest-lived\u201d tree species, with the oldest known specimen\u00a0said to have been 3,266 years old, according to\u00a0the\u00a0National Park Service<\/a>\u00a0(NPS).<\/p>\n

When the park reopens Monday, officials said areas south of Yosemite Valley, including Mariposa Grove, will stay closed \u201cuntil further notice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Campgrounds and lodges have been closed for several weeks because the park is trying to reduce the chances of visitors spreading the coronavirus.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
