Spotify is listening. <\/p>\n

The music streaming service was finally granted a patent \u2014 nearly three years after submitting plans \u2014 for an algorithm that can better predict what users want to hear \u2014 by listening-in on their conversations.<\/p>\n

The artificial intelligence technology<\/a> will predict users\u2019 \u201cemotional state, gender, age, or accent\u201d by tuning-in on music listeners\u2019 conversations. <\/p>\n

The patent for \u201cIdentification of taste attributes from an audio signal,\u201d as the invention is called, was filed<\/a> in February 2018, and granted on January 12 of this year, Music Business Worldwide reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Spotify suggests that analyzing \u201cintonation, stress, rhythm and the likes of units of speech\u201d could help predict whether users are \u201chapp<\/a>y, angry, sad or neutral.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company thinks their customers will appreciate the passive prediction tool \u2014 as opposed to \u201ctediously input[ting] answers to multiple queries in order for the system to identify the user\u2019s taste,\u201d Spotify wrote in their patent application. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is needed is an entirely different approach to collecting taste attributes of a user,\u201d they added, so human effort is \u201cat least partially eliminated.\u201d<\/p>\n

The information gathered would effectively be no different than what Spotify can access already about their users, such as their music library, their friends\u2019 libraries and current location.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is common for a media<\/a> streaming application to include features that provide personalized media recommendations to a user,\u201d Spotify claims, according to the patent filing.<\/p>\n

Similar tools are being developed and applied to all sorts of industries and services. In 2017, artificial intelligence was able to identify whether or not a person was suicidal \u2014 with 94% accuracy \u2014 based on how their brain reacted to certain trigger words.<\/p>\n

More recently, pediatric researchers began developing machine learning technology in 2019 that can detect depression and anxiety in children\u2019s voices \u2014 as many may not be developmentally equipped to detect these feelings in themselves. Kids who internalize emotional struggles are at a greater risk of substance abuse and suicide in later years.<\/p><\/div>\n
