\n The newly app<\/a>ointed police chief, mayor and members of Portland, Oregon\u2019s black community slammed protesters who set fire to a police precinct early Friday morning and vandalized businesses.<\/p>\n

They said the rioters were harming the community and urged them to stop.<\/p>\n

Police Chief Chuck Lovell, who is black, called the actions \u201cnot only reprehensible, but they\u2019re evil.\u201d He stressed that people were inside the precinct when vandals barricaded the doors after they were unable to break through a garage.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt needs to stop, and it needs to stop today,\u2018\u2019 Lovell said, according to the Oregonian.<\/p>\n

Several hundred demonstrators set fire to the North Precinct building. Police in riot gear used CS gas, a type of tear gas, around 2:15 a.m. to disperse them.<\/p>\n

Local black leaders called the criminal activity the work of \u201cterrorists,\u2018\u2019 \u201cdelinquents,\u2018\u2019 and the \u201cact of a coward.\u2018\u2019 They accused rioters of undermining the Black Lives Movement and damaging black-owned businesses.<\/p>\n

Mayor Ted Wheeler called the destruction \u201ca horrible, horrendous miscalculation.\u201d<\/p>\n

A local community activist said the black community will no longer tolerate such destruction in its neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I hear about somebody burning something down, I think that is an act that\u2019s always been used against black people,\u2018\u2019 Ronnie Herndon said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is a tactic that\u2019s been used to destroy black people, not help black people. So whoever the demented individual is who did this \u2026 you are not helping us.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
