Steve Cohen said that\u00a0\u201cpersonal threats\u201d his family received over the GameStop saga forced him to flee Twitter for now.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The new Mets owner in a statement Saturday explained why his Twitter account, which had showcased a little-known playful side of the hedge-fund magnate as he engaged with fans, was deactivated Friday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve really enjoyed the back and forth with Mets fans on Twitter which was unfortunately overtaken this week by misinformation unrelated to the Mets that led to our family getting personal threats,\u201d the statement read. \u201cSo I\u2019m going to take a break for now. We have other ways to listen to your suggestions and remain committed to doing that.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI love our team, this community, and our fans, who are the best in baseball.\u00a0Bottom line is that this week\u2019s events in no way affect our resources and drive to put a championship team on the field. #LGM!\u201d<\/p>\n

The source of Cohen\u2019s wealth, rather than his recent purchase, became the focus of the 64-year-old\u2019s Twitter account this past week, thanks to the financial world\u2019s GameStop saga. Cohen\u2019s Point72 Asset Management and fellow hedge fund Citadel, run by billionaire Ken Griffin, had reportedly invested a combined $2.75 billion into Melvin Capital Management, which has been crushed after the attempted short squeeze on GameStop stock. Melvin is run by Cohen\u2019s former prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Gabe Plotkin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Cohen got into a Twitter back and forth with Dave Portnoy after the Barstool Sports founder blasted the Mets owner following restrictions that were placed on trading app<\/a>s, such as Robinhood, that were hurting the novice investors behind the ballooning of GameStop\u2019s stock value. <\/p>\n

WFAN morning host Boomer Esiason ripped Cohen on Friday, saying he would stop attending Mets games \u201cuntil I find out exactly what\u2019s going on here\u201d with Cohen\u2019s involvement in the matter.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
