Most of these union laborers, welders and pipefitters started their day over a cup of coffee in the hotel\u2019s common room before heading out to their jobs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By 4 p.m., the entire place was cleared out, leaving the historic hotel silent for the first time since owners Laurie and Wally Cox took it over six months ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur whole world turned upside down with the stroke of a pen,\u201d Laurie said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She is speaking of President Biden\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/20\/executive-order-protecting-public-health-and-environment-and-restoring-science-to-tackle-climate-crisis\/\">executive order<\/a>, signed on his first day in office, that halted work on the Keystone XL pipeline in South Dakota and im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aopl.org\/stories\/aopl-laments-jobs-lost-on-biden-s-on-first-day\">eliminated 1,000 union jobs<\/a>. TC Energy, the company that was developing the project, predicts that more than 10,000 jobs will be lost in 2021 due to the order.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now Laurie, who holds a master\u2019s degree in social work, sits alone in the vacant hotel while her husband Wally finds work as a millwright hours away. She starts to cry as she recalls how they bought the building in late September and quickly turned it into an affordable and social place for pipeline workers to stay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe structured our prices to suit the per diems of each trade,\u201d she said. \u201cWe created a common room because there is a real sense of community within these workers, and we thrived since the day we opened our doors.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since Jan. 20, \u201cthe entire town became an instant ghost down.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The XL pipeline wasn\u2019t the only project stopped by Biden\u2019s pen. On Wednesday, he issued an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/fact-sheet-president-biden-take-action-uphold-commitment-restore-balance-public-lands\">executive order<\/a> halting oil and gas leasing and drilling permits on federal lands and waters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That order hit hardest in New Mexico, where the oil- and gas-rich Permian Basin lies largely on federal land.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" alt=\"The Keystone XL Pipeline\" class=\"wp-image-17190904 lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/keystone-pipeline.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=300 300w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/keystone-pipeline.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=640 640w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/keystone-pipeline.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1280 1280w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/keystone-pipeline.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/01\/keystone-pipeline.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2000 2000w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Biden\u2019s order stopping work at the Keystone XL pipeline eliminated 1,000 union jobs in a flash.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAs a direct result of the executive order, I was just contacted by a Canadian company to inform me that the plant they were going to construct and operate in south Eddy County will instead go to Reeves County in Texas where their operation will not be surrounded by federal land,\u201d said John Waters, executive director of the Carlsbad Department of Development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In New Mexico alone, potentially 62,000 jobs and $1 billion in revenue will be lost in the first year after Biden signed his mandate, according to a recent <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/\">economic impact study<\/a> by the American Petroleum Institute.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will also cost a lot of jobs in the industry, the small businesses that support them and take a major bite out of our economic development,\u201d Waters said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New Mexico\u2019s oil, gas and mining industries fund 40 percent of the state\u2019s tax revenue. In 2019, that totaled $3.1 billion, with $1.36 billion of that flowing to public schools. It\u2019s literally kicking a state that\u2019s already down while they\u2019re down.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The offshore drilling ban will also hurt the Gulf Coast of Louisiana. Data compiled by API <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/news-policy-and-issues\/news\/2020\/09\/09\/gulf-states-federal-leasing-ban\">shows<\/a> it could potentially result in a loss of 48,000 jobs by 2022 and put more than $95 million in state revenue at risk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jaedon Burregi\u2019s grocery store in Galliano, La., is one business that depends on the industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cater a lot to the oil and gas industry by delivering to all the supply boats that then deliver to the rigs,\u201d said Burregi, 29, whose family owns and runs the Galliano Food Store. \u201cThere are four of us in the family who work here and we employ 55 people. We will immediately feel the economic impact.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Burregi said if Biden came to his hometown he\u2019d show him around his store and introduce him to his employees, so the president could see how his policies have actually impacted their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s easy when you live in bigger cities on the East Coast or West Coast to enact policies that pick winners and losers,\u201d Burregi said. \u201cBut small towns are the ones most often affected.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When Gina McCarthy, Biden\u2019s national climate change adviser, was asked why the administration is punishing the oil and gas industries in the middle of an economic crisis, she said they\u2019re doing it because the economy is stagnant and \u201cenvironmental justice communities have been left behind.\u201d Biden has also stressed that his policies will create jobs in the green energy sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But these answers miss the fact that Biden\u2019s executive actions will devastate thousands of Americans, who come from a wide range of places, ethnicities and political viewpoints.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Elections, of course, have consequences.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And \u201cthose of us in the energy industry or support them are the carnage,\u201d said Laurie Cox. \u201cI fear this is just the tip of the iceberg of what comes next.\u201d\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
