The retail rebellion claimed victory on the trading floor \u2014 but it may be doomed for defeat in the courtroom.<\/p>\n

The infuriated investors who sued Robinhood for freezing trading on Game<\/a>Stop and other stocks will likely struggle to win their cases because brokerages have broad latitude to impose such restrictions, a report says.<\/p>\n

Robinhood user Brendon Nelson filed a class-action lawsuit Thursday over the financial startup\u2019s decision to block traders from buying shares in the video-game retailer. The suit accused Robinhood of violating a federal rule requiring trading app<\/a>s to \u201cmake every effort to execute a marketable customer order that it receives promptly and fully.\u201d<\/p>\n

But brokerages like Robinhood aren\u2019t obligated to unconditionally accept those orders in the first place \u2014 and their customer agreements give them the power to block or restrict trades if they see fit, legal experts told Bloomberg News.<\/a><\/p>\n

For instance, the customer agreement<\/a> that Robinhood clients sign stipulates that the company \u201cmay at any time, in its sole discretion and without prior notice to me, prohibit or restrict my ability to trade securities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not aware of any law that would guarantee you a right to purchase a certain security at a certain brokerage firm,\u201d Jeff Erez, a lawyer representing people who sued Robinhood over service disruptions last year, told Bloomberg.<\/p>\n

Robinhood is also facing lawsuits from clients in Chicago, California, New Jersey and Florida, according to Bloomberg. New York Attorney General<\/a> Letitia James said her office is reviewing the app\u2019s wild trading activity, and the Securities and Exchange Commission is looking into the broader market frenzy.<\/p>\n

While the lawsuits may get thrown out, one securities lawyer told Bloomberg that it\u2019s \u201cextraordinarily rare\u201d for brokers like Robinhood to stop trading of a stock without regulators telling them to do so.<\/p>\n

The lawsuits getting filed \u201ctells me that the broker-dealers who stopped trading by their own volition are potentially going to be in a lot of trouble \u2014\u00a0both on a regulatory level and on a civil-litigation level,\u201d Adam Gana of the Gana Weinstein law firm told Bloomberg.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
