Owens<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>#: Stop laughing about <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Game<\/a>Stop\u2019s stock mania \u2014 no, really<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"article__subhead\" itemprop=\"alternativeHeadline\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reddits_WallStreetBets_is_really_the_same_old_story_%E2%80%94_a_concerted_effort_of_market_manipulators_who_will_get_rich_and_surely_destroy_some_unwitting_participants_in_the_process\"><\/span>\n  Reddit\u2019s WallStreetBets is really the same old story \u2014 a concerted effort of market manipulators who will get rich and surely destroy some unwitting participants in the process.<br \/>\n<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><\/p>\n<div class=\"column column--full article__content\">\n<div id=\"js-article__body\" class=\"article__body article-wrap at16-col16 barrons-article-wrap\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-sbid=\"WP-MKTW-0000143568\">\n<div class=\"barrons-article-ad-wrapper\">\n<div data-track=\"barrons-article-ad-wrap\" class=\"barrons-article-ad sticky_item\">\n<div class=\"barrons-main-article-ad-target sticky_target body_ad\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       After watching a third consecutive day of Redditors helping to push the stock of a beleaguered retail chain to an undeserved record valuation of more than $10 billion Tuesday, I saw rapid fire jokes on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> about the situation. <\/p>\n<p> So I fired off a response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> tone of the conversation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       \u201cI get that people think it\u2019s funny when bad things h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en to Wall Street types, but this GameStop<br \/>\n        GME,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203755179\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+67.87%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       thing is not a joke,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jowens510\/status\/1354196558657425409\" class=\"icon none\">I tweeted<\/a>. \u201cThese are stock traders conspiring to manipulate the markets in open view of us all and using the \u2018nah, its for the lulz, and the other side sucks\u2019 as an excuse.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>The response to my tweet was a cacophony of anger, even though I had been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jowens510\/status\/1352725479866863616\" class=\"icon none\">saying similar things for days<\/a> and I was not alone in my assessment. The overwhelming sentiment was that I was siding with Wall Street in what has been presented to the larger public as a battle between big banks and the little people \u2014 a view that <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/wallstreetbets\/comments\/l5teyc\/we_are_tired_of_market_manipulators_and_corrupted\/\" class=\"icon none\">the message board has enthusiastically gotten behind<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>But look at how I described the people on WallStreetBets: Stock traders, just like whatever your vision of \u201cWall Street\u201d probably entails. They are doing this for the money, not for any sense of \u201cjustice\u201d against hedge funds or a good chuckle. <\/p>\n<p>Many posters trade for a living, and not all of them are day-trading their Tesla profits \u2014 Wall Street knows about WallStreetBets as it makes its bets, at the very least, and has not been excluded from GameStop\u2019s rise. With its own share of most pies and high-frequency traders front-running the Robinhood crowd, the sheriff of Nottingham will get his tax no matter what. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> Here are other heavily shorted stocks shooting higher <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Two_links_in_the_same_chain\"><\/span>Two links in the same chain<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>I see two links in the same chain, and I am not choosing one over the other. I am \u2014 as the name of this site demands \u2014 watching the market. And I see a group of investors acting in concert to artificially inflate the valuation of an asset beyond what is rational, which really smells like market manipulation. <\/p>\n<p>And they have attracted an army who promise the group to have \u201cdiamond hands\u201d until the very top, as support and exultations to \u201cHODL\u201d swarm them from the others on the board. In the end, some of these unsophisticated investors are likely to be left holding the bag on GameStop at an unreasonable valuation.<\/p>\n<p>You may think it\u2019s funny to value GameStop like it\u2019s 2007 again and hurt some hedge funds in the process, but you might not think the next target is funny, nor the next, nor the next. You won\u2019t laugh when you read the eventual feature about a teenager misplaying GameStop options on his dad\u2019s account and costing them the house, or a first-time investor putting their savings into GameStop just before it all fell apart. <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>The dot-com bubble had the Yahoo message boards, which eventually led to pump-and-dump charges against individual investors, and the current market hysteria will forever be tied to Reddit. A Reddit spokeswoman told MarketWatch that its policies \u201cprohibit posting illegal content or soliciting or facilitating illegal transactions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will review and cooperate with valid law\u00a0enforcement\u00a0investigations or actions as needed,\u201d she said in an emailed statement. <\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know how regulators will eventually seek to address what is happening on WallStreetBets, nor if prosecutors will ever attempt to untangle who is the most liable and levy charges.
