“#Shaka King talks raising money for ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Shaka King had a brutal reality check following his first time premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013 with \u201cNewlyweeds.\u201d<\/p>\n

King, who returns to the festival this year to debut the highly anticipated film \u201cJudas and the Black Messiah,\u201d said he made a huge mistake \u201cgiving away\u201d his first film \u201cfor nothing to a terrible distributor,\u201d which taught him to fight for his projects going forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a black artist, I\u2019ve had to measure my success by a different metric for my own sanity and happ<\/a>iness,\u201d he said on Friday while in conversation with Questlove, who premiered the documentary \u201cSummer of Soul\u201d at this year\u2019s festival.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s great because it\u2019s gotten me to a place psychologically where I don\u2019t need white people to care about what I do,\u201d King continued. \u201cI haven\u2019t needed white people to care about what I do in years now, you know? But what\u2019s corny is I need money to make stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

King recalled thinking \u201cJudas and the Black Messiah,\u201d which tells the story of William O\u2019Neal infiltrating the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party to gather intelligence on Chairman Fred Hampton for the FBI, would easily receive studio financing given its power producer, Ryan Coogler (fresh off of \u201cBlack Panther\u201d), and stars Lakeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya. But he said he was mistaken. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d think we\u2019d walk into a bidding war situation, and all of the studios that we pitched to minus Warner Bros. just really came in and lowballed us in terms of what they were willing to give us to make a movie like this because they thought it wasn\u2019t worth enough,\u201d King explained. \u201cThey thought it wouldn\u2019t \u2026 make enough money based upon the algorithms that they came up with that are totally ridiculous.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you hear that, capitalism, racism, \u2018I thought you all liked making money?’\u201d he continued. \u201cIt\u2019s like a real mental illness.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJudas and the Black Messiah\u201d premieres on Monday, Feb. 1.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
