\u201cMajor press outlets celebrated\u201d videographer Jon Farina\u2019s footage of the Jan. 6 Capitol assault, shown on the Status Coup site, reports Matt Taibbi at his TK News blog<\/a>. But on Jan. 18, \u201canother Farina live stream was shut down by YouTube<\/a>, thanks to policies that will make it very difficult for non-corporate media\u201d to do live reporting. He filmed a Virginia gun-rights protest that, despite media predictions, turned out to be \u201cpeaceful and unremarkable.\u201d YouTube claimed the footage violated its \u201cFirearms Policy,\u201d relenting only after high-profile complaints \u2014 and never restored the content of other independents covering the rally. Such policies prevent live independent coverage of left-wing rallies, even as mainstream outlets broadcast the same scenes. Status Coup chief Jordan Chariton says \u201cit\u2019s basically a death sentence for outlets like ours.\u201d<\/p>\n

Campus watch: Administrators vs. the Classics<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the name of ending \u201cwhite supremacy,\u201d colleges across the Anglo-American world are eviscerating traditional offerings, including classical history and even Chaucer, warns Sumantra Maitra at The National Interest<\/a>. Radicals are engaged in \u201ca relentless assault in the name of diversity and inclusion, whether they are \u2018decolonizing,\u2019 or \u2018disrupting texts,\u2019 which are all clever ploys to dilute what might be considered an objectively superior canon\u201d \u2014 and administrations, which have doubled in size, rarely resist because a \u201crisk-averse bureaucracy\u201d only cares about \u201cself-sustaining and expanding\u201d its own reach. Mediocre bureaucrats, with \u201climited intellect or app<\/a>reciation about the historic tradition and purpose of higher-ed, are practically ignorant about what destruction they are bringing in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scholar: House\u2019s Hearing-Free Impeach Horror<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cFor the first time in history, the House sent an article of impeachment to the Senate without any hearing, any testimony or any response from the president,\u201d observes Jonathan Turley at The Hill<\/a>. Will the Senate \u201clegitimize this radical departure from the traditions of both chambers\u201d? Turley, like others, \u201ccalled for the House to hold at least a day of hearings\u201d to let President Donald Trump respond. \u201cYet the House refused.\u201d Speaker Nancy Pelosi said \u201cthere was not a day to spare,\u201d then \u201cwaited almost two weeks to submit the article to the Senate.\u201d A hearing could\u2019ve supplied evidence on, for example, \u201cwhether the National Guard was offered to Congress in advance or whether Trump obstructed any such assistance.\u201d No wonder an acquittal is \u201clikely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandemic journal: Opening Schools Can\u2019t Wait<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Biden wants schools reopened in 100 days, notes Joel Zinberg at City Journal<\/a> \u2014 but \u201cwhy wait\u201d? Evidence shows closures are \u201charmful\u201d and \u201cdo little to protect against illness\u201d in kids or teachers. They damage kids\u2019 \u201cacademic progress, social development and mental health\u201d and force parents to stop working to care for their children. Yet as early as last summer, the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded children aren\u2019t at great risk or likely to spread COVID. This month, CDC researchers found little evidence of community transmission in schools. A Wisconsin study found COVID rates lower among kids and school staff than in the community. Sweden saw the same. To avoid further damage, we shouldn\u2019t wait for teachers\u2019 unions \u201cto acquiesce\u201d or \u201cfor Congress to approve more spending. Schools should reopen as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign desk: Nuke Deal\u2019s Grave Risks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rejoining the Iran nuclear deal \u201cposes considerable risks to regional and even global security,\u201d Amos Yadlin and Ebtesam al-Ketbi argue at Foreign Affairs<\/a>. If President Biden insists on reviving it, he should at least take steps to \u201censure that Tehran does not acquire nuclear weapons\u201d and reassure regional allies \u201cWashington will not gamble with their security.\u201d The 2015 deal \u201cproved flawed\u201d; now Biden needs a revised version \u201cto de-escalate tension, put Iran\u2019s nuclear activity on pause and withhold enough concessions to give Iran incentive\u201d to negotiate further. A second-stage deal must rein in \u201cIran\u2019s nuclear program to the greatest extent possible.\u201d To return to the old nuke deal at all is \u201chighly risky.\u201d Team Biden needs to remember: \u201cHope is not a strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n
