Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday night issued a state of emergency order due to the monster storm that\u2019s expected to wallop New York City.<\/p>\n

Residents were urged to stay home during the storm \u2014 with all non-essential travel<\/a> restricted beginning at 6 a.m. on Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a very dangerous storm,\u201d the mayor said on NY1.<\/p>\n

Only those seeking medical treatment or medical supplies and essential workers \u2014 such as first responders, pharmacy and grocery store staffers and restaurant and delivery workers \u2014 will be allowed on the roads.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew Yorkers should stay home, keep the roads clear for emergency vehicles and let our plows work to keep us safe,\u201d de Blasio said in a statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cMake no mistake: this storm will bring heavy snowfall and it will make travel<\/a> dangerous in every neighborhood in our city.\u201d<\/p>\n

The storm \u2014 dubbed Orlena by the Weather Channel \u2014 is expected to dump between 18 and 24 inches of snow on the Big App<\/a>le through Monday and into Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The heaviest snowfall is forecast for mid-morning on Monday into the evening, with the potential for flakes to come down at a rate of 1 to 3 inches per hour. <\/p>\n

The mix of heavy snow and gusty winds could lead to blizzard conditions.<\/p>\n

It would be the first time in at least five years that the city gets blanketed with more than a foot of snow during a single storm.<\/p>\n

De Blasio said earlier on Sunday that coronavirus-vaccination appointments scheduled for Monday had been postponed due to the impending storm, with a decision on Tuesday\u2019s appointments yet to be made.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will be rescheduled quickly,\u201d he later said on NY1 about Monday\u2019s appointments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want people out trying to get a vaccination and end up being in harm\u2019s way during this weather.\u201d<\/p>\n

In-person instruction at the city\u2019s public schools was also scrapped for Monday, with classes moving online. <\/p>\n

Alternate-side parking was suspended for both Monday and Tuesday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
