But there is rich history in many under-the-radar places like Providence, R.I., Pensacola, Fla., Augusta, Ga., and in California, Allensworth and San Diego.<\/p>\n<p> Here\u2019s a deeper look at their often-overlooked stories.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Augusta_Ga\"><\/span>1. Augusta, Ga.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p><strong>Augusta\u00a0is the birthplace of The Godfather of Soul, James Brown.<\/strong>\u00a0At the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.augustamuseum.org\/\" class=\"icon none\">Augusta Museum of History<\/a>, the\u00a0James Brown Exhibit\u00a0features rare memorabilia and personal artifacts that give you a glimpse into his life\u00a0via costumes, interviews, records, images and audiovisual stations which highlight concert performances, albums, studio recordings and more. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Downtown, there\u2019s a life-size bronze statue of the superstar that contains the world\u2019s only James Brown Cam which will take your photo and send it to your cellphone within minutes. Do take a private tour led by his daughter Deanna Brown where you\u2019ll visit his favorite haunts.\u00a0You can do this through the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jbtour.jamesbrownfamilyfdn.org\/\" class=\"icon none\">James Brown Family Foundation<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll get the JB vibe all over town as many places have food and\u00a0drinks named after him. A must-stop is the\u00a0Soul Bar Augusta. It celebrates the icon with artists who cover Brown\u2019s songs and do tributes. The walls are filled with d\u00e9cor honoring him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Augusta was also the home of Lucy Craft Laney<\/strong>, an African-American educator who opened the first school for African-American children in 1883.\u00a0The\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lucycraftlaneymuseum.com\/\" class=\"icon none\">Lucy Craft Laney Museum<\/a>\u00a0is the only African-American Museum in the Central Savannah River Area. The small building was once her home. It is a source for soaking up history as well as special programs and events.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Learn more during the\u00a0African-American History Walk. Trek down Laney Walker Boulevard, a street that pays homage to some of Augusta\u2019s prominent African-American leaders. See monuments dedicated to Essie McIntyre, the first Black female to be ordained in the Augusta area, Judge John H. Ruffin, the first African-American chief judge of the Georgia Court of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>eals, and Laney, founder of the\u00a0Haines Normal &amp; Industrial Institute Lamar School of Nursing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also read: <\/strong>Black Americans suffered the most under Trump-era consumer-protection agency, study finds<\/p>\n<p>A large population of free African-Americans settled in the neighborhood of Springfield by 1787. They established the Springfield Baptist Church, one of the oldest independent Black congregations in the U.S. which is still open and where Morehouse College originated.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Pensacola_Fla\"><\/span>2. Pensacola, Fla.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>You could mistake Pensacola Beach for the shimmering waters of the Caribbean, but there\u2019s much more to the\u00a0Pensacola\u00a0story and plenty of African-American history. <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gdcjflightacademy.org\/\" class=\"icon none\">Chappie James Museum and Flight Academy<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is on the\u00a0National Register of Historic Places\u00a0and honors \u201cChappie,\u201d the first African-American four-star <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> and a Tuskegee Airman.\u00a0The flight facility offers year-round aviation experiences, in which you\u2019ll learn about Chappie and the Tuskegee Airmen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Continue your history lesson in the\u00a0Belmont-DeVilliers\u00a0neighborhood,<\/strong> an official stop on the\u00a0Mississippi Blues Trail, dubbed the Harlem of the South.\u00a0Locals and the likes of B.B. King, Sam Cooke, Tina Turner and James Brown performed in the neighborhood\u2019s theaters and clubs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t miss:<\/strong> 5 ways to support black-owned businesses<\/p>\n<p>Today you\u2019ll get a belly full of Southern cuisine at\u00a05 Sisters Blues Caf\u00e9\u00a0with its gumbo du jour, fried green tomatoes, Aunt Cora\u2019s blue crab cakes, fried okra, black-eyed peas, mac and cheese and more good stuff than should be legal. There\u2019s live music on weekends and a Sunday jazz brunch. You\u2019ll love the old concert posters and photos.\u00a0Blue Dot Barbecue\u00a0is another favorite. The\u00a0DeVilliers Cultural Heritage Museum\u00a0was created as a performing arts venue to showcase local and national blues, gospel and jazz artists. In the 1920s, Belmont-DeVilliers was also the home to Viola Edwards Hospital, the first Black-owned hospital.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Providence_RI\"><\/span>3. Providence, R.I.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Rhode Island\u00a0may be a tiny state, but it has a big Black history story. According to the\u00a0John Carter Brown Library\u00a0at\u00a0Brown University, of the approximately 12 million Africans transported to America by the mid-19th century, 600,000\u00a0came to mainland North America, and some 100,000 were carried in Rhode Island ships. He is an encyclopedia of Rhode Island Black history and will tell you as much as you have time for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Center for Reconciliation, a nonprofit, offers public programs, exhibitions<\/strong>, and workshops about the history and legacy of slavery, the slave trade and the construction of race and racial identities in New England and America. They offer\u00a0walking tours\u00a0as well as a bus tour through three neighborhoods that tell the story of Providence and the international slave trade.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Providence\u00a0was also the adopted home of Edward Bannister,<\/strong> noted artist and co-founder of the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/providenceartclub.org\/\" class=\"icon none\">Providence Art Club<\/a>. He was married to a wealthy wife and owner of a yacht. In the late 1880s he was one of the most famous Black artists in the country. Internationally renowned opera singer\u00a0Sissieretta Jones called Providence home. During the late 1880s and\u00a0early 1900s, she was one of the highest paid African-American performers in the U.S. Later, she founded the Black Patti Troubadours, a musical and acrobatic act of 40 jugglers, comedians and dancers. In 2013 she was inducted into the\u00a0Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame. Brown University moved forward, with an African American woman, Ruth Simmons, PhD., serving as president from 2001-2012.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Allensworth_Calif\"><\/span>4. Allensworth, Calif.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Allensworth\u00a0is the only town in\u00a0California\u00a0that was founded, funded, built\u00a0and governed exclusively by African-Americans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/friendsofallensworth.com\/colonel-allensworth\/\" class=\"icon none\">Lt. Col. Allen Allensworth<\/a>\u00a0escaped slavery in Kentucky, served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and migrated west after Emancipation. Settling in\u00a0Los Angeles, he built a summer home in Tulare County and joined with other Black leaders to purchase land in the area. Inspired by the need for economic independence and refuge from racial discrimination in the region, Col. Allensworth directed the establishment of an all-Black agricultural town that had 300 residents in its peak years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>People who lived there were craftsmen, artisans, business owners, farmers, ranchers, retired members of the military, and members of the U.S. Buffalo Soldiers, who protected the town. Allensworth thrived until the mid-1920s when the town declined, and many people left. It survived into the 1960s. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> 6 ways to invest in racial justice<\/p>\n<p>Today,\u00a0Colonel Allensworth Historic State Park<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/parks.ca.gov\/allensworth\/\" class=\"icon none\"> (CAHSP)<\/a>\u00a0is a tribute to Allensworth\u2019s legacy. Established in 1976, the park preserves 240 acres of the town center and includes nine restored buildings and an outdoor staging area. The\u00a0Visitors\u2019 Center\u00a0arranges tours of the park. There are events throughout the year to celebrate Allenworth\u2019s history. Visitors to the park can use\u00a0Visalia Municipal Airport\u00a0and find hotels like Hyatt<br \/>\n        H,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207542923\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-4.10%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       Place and Holiday Inn Express in nearby\u00a0Delano, and fantastic soul food in\u00a0Bakersfield\u00a0at\u00a0J\u2019s Place\u00a0and\u00a0Lucille\u2019s Smokehouse BBQ.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Julian_Calif_San_Diego_County\"><\/span>5. Julian, Calif. (San Diego County)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>This historic gold mining town in the Cuyamaca Mountains is in the eastern part of San Diego County, about an hour from the heart of\u00a0San Diego. Today\u00a0Julian\u00a0is beloved for its apple orchards and pies. The story goes that African-American pioneer Fred Coleman discovered the gold that began the famous gold rush in Julian in 1870.
