When David Honig sits down to watch the Super Bowl 2021 on Sunday, like everyone, it won\u2019t be at an office party. \u201cNot this year,\u201d said the Montville, NJ, resident. <\/p>\n

However, Honig, vice president of strategy and corporate partnerships at software provider Dynamic Signal (DySi), will be able to watch the big game<\/a> with not only his family but also his co-workers. From a COVID-19-safe distance, that is.<\/p>\n

The work-from-home team at DySi will \u201cbe involved in all kinds of things\u201d via Zoom, said the 50-year-old, including \u201cSuper Bowl boxes, taking hourly, real-time polls on commercials, rating the half-time show, sharing videos of our families and pictures of what we\u2019re eating. There\u2019s something in the Super Bowl for everyone. It\u2019s something we do every year.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, it\u2019s a ritual, as workplace expert Erica Keswin defines it in her latest book, \u201cRituals Roadmap: The Human Way To Transform Everyday Routines Into Workplace Magic\u201d <\/a>(McGraw Hill Education).<\/p>\n

\u201cA ritual is something that you do at your company, in a group, or in life at a regular cadence that you can\u2019t imagine wouldn\u2019t happ<\/a>en,\u201d said Keswin. Rituals tend to bring everyone together and be inclusive, so that there\u2019s something in them for everyone who participates, \u201cfrom the top down, bottom up and inside out,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Not only that, but rituals can offer connection between the top executives like Honig and super sharp, hard-to-keep workers. They can also be big equalizers. Last year, the biggest football junkie at DySi didn\u2019t win the grand prize in the Super Bowl squares \u2014 someone who wasn\u2019t even into the sport was the champ.<\/p>\n

But rituals aren\u2019t only about football. At Stash, a digital investing and banking platform in the Garment District, they went big during National Hispanic Heritage Month last September, bringing in a salsa band via Zoom during the weekly meeting. Led by the company\u2019s Latinx employee resource group, everyone was able to celebrate together remotely. Even families and friends were invited to join in.<\/p>\n

Events like these speak to a company\u2019s key values. \u201cDiversity and inclusion are very important here,\u201d said Brandon Krieg, CEO and co-founder of Stash. \u201cWe\u2019re serious about [employee] mental health, too,\u201d added Krieg, which is why the company hosts roundtables specifically on the subject.<\/p>\n

Rituals like these \u201cgo beyond the practical\u201d and provide participants with a real sense of belonging. That\u2019s a big deal because, according to Keswin, \u201c70 percent of employees don\u2019t feel engaged in their workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not the case at Chipotle Mexican Grill where early shift workers sit down together every morning at 10:15 to eat lunch together.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is when we get to know each other, get to know about each other\u2019s families,\u201d said Carol Moy, 20, who lives on the Upper West Side and is training to become a general<\/a> manager at the Columbus Square store. \u201cIt\u2019s where we laugh a lot and feel comfortable. We don\u2019t have time for that when we\u2019re working.\u201d<\/p>\n

She and her teammates at the restaurant have formed bonds while chowing down; as a result, they know that they can count on each other as they work. And at Chipotle, there is such a thing as a free lunch, since it\u2019s taken on the clock and the food is free.<\/p>\n

At software-maker Bubble there\u2019s something almost always going on. Aside from Slack-enabled scavenger hunts, the company hosts storytelling sessions once a month. Bubble staffers perform short stand-up monologues on subjects like, \u201cmy most embarrassing moment\u201d or \u201cplaces I went with my family.\u201d Other activities include virtual poker games, Pictionary and Skribbl.io.<\/p>\n

In October, Bubblers even used their company\u2019s no-code visual programming platform to build Halloween apps. The idea, from the company\u2019s perspective, is to provide workers who may or may not encounter each other on the job a way to get to know each other, spend time together and laugh.<\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t all of this a bit much, you might be wondering? According to Keswin, maybe not, especially if employers are providing \u201cindividuals with a way to connect to the collective.\u201d At DySi, the Super Bowl is only one of many events they, or one of their employee-led groups, are hosting this year. The aim is to have something for everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmployee engagement and employee communications are very important here. People are asking us to be inclusive, diverse and to give back,\u201d said Honig. \u201cWe\u2019ve done that from the start. For us, that\u2019s mission critical.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
