Jennifer Lopez<\/strong> will play an assassin who gets back in the game<\/a> to protect the child she gave up years ago in\u00a0The Mother<\/em><\/strong>. The Netflix movie comes from director Niki Caro<\/strong>, who helmed the live-action\u00a0Mulan<\/em> remake, and writer Misha Green<\/strong>, who created\u00a0Lovecraft Country<\/em> and who was recently announced as the writer and director of the\u00a0Tomb Raider<\/em> sequel. This is the second Netflix project Lopez is involved with \u2013 she\u2019s also set to produce and star in the Netflix thriller\u00a0The Cipher<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Deadline broke the news<\/a>: Jennifer Lopez will star in\u00a0The Mother<\/em>, a film about a \u201cdeadly female assassin who comes out of hiding to protect the daughter that she gave up years before, while on the run from dangerous men.\u201d Deadline adds that the film is being compared to\u00a0The Professional<\/em>, AKA\u00a0Leon<\/em>, the 1994 film starring\u00a0Jean Reno, Natalie Portman, and Gary Oldman.
\nThe script<\/a> for\u00a0The Mother<\/em> was originally written by\u00a0Lovecraft Country<\/em>\u2018s Misha Green, with\u00a0Straight Outta Compton<\/em>\u2018s\u00a0Andrea Berloff<\/strong> handling re-writes. Niki Caro, who directed Disney\u2019s live-action\u00a0Mulan<\/em> remake, is set to helm for Netflix. Lopez is also working with Netflix on\u00a0The Cipher<\/em>, a thriller about an FBI agent who is \u201cpulled into a serial killer\u2019s case after he leaves complex codes and riddles online, which are linked to his recent murders.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both\u00a0The Mother<\/em> and\u00a0The Cipher<\/em> sound like the type of mid-budget thriller that used to hit the big screen back in the 1990s, and I\u2019m not complaining. I\u2019m all for streaming services picking up the type of project big studios don\u2019t pump out anymore. Give me\u00a0variety<\/em>, that\u2019s all I ask. If Hollywood only wants to produce franchises and superhero stuff, someone, somewhere, has to fill the void. If it\u2019s Netflix, so be it.<\/p>\n

Lopez is keeping busy. In addition to\u00a0The Mother<\/em> and\u00a0The Cipher<\/em>, she\u2019s also attached to star in the rom-com\u00a0Marry Me<\/em> with Owen Wilson,\u00a0The Godmother<\/em>, based on the true story of\u00a0Griselda \u201cLa Madrina\u201d Blanco, Colombian drug lord of the Medell\u00edn Cartel and a major part of the Miami cocaine drug trade during the 1980s, and the comedy\u00a0Shotgun Wedding<\/em>, which was going to team Lopez up with Armie Hammer. Hammer has recently left the project due to several scandals that have cropped up involving his personal life.<\/p>\n

Lopez will produce\u00a0The Mother<\/em> along with\u00a0Elaine Goldsmith Thomas for Nuyorican Productions. Other producers include Benny Medina; Roy Lee and Miri Yoon for Vertigo Entertainment; and Misha Green. Catherine Hagedorn is the executive producer, and Courtney Baxter is the associate producer.<\/p>\n
