Michael Sheen\u2019s Martin Whitly unleashes a killer performance in Tuesday night\u2019s episode of \u201cProdigal Son.\u201d<\/p>\n

In \u201cTake Your Father to Work Day,\u201d there\u2019s a murder in Martin\u2019s asylum \u2014 which means that his son, former FBI profiler Malcolm (Tom Payne) ,must come investigate \u2014 much to Martin\u2019s delight. <\/p>\n

Tensions soon arise as they\u2019re forced to confront their complex mixture of love for each other versus their long-simmering resentment (Malcolm of serial killer Martin\u2019s dark legacy; Martin of Malcolm\u2019s turning him in years ago).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI am drawn to characters that have something different going on underneath rather than what\u2019s on the surface,\u201d Sheen, 51 tells The Post. \u201cI think that\u2019s true of people general<\/a>ly \u2014 we\u2019re always aware of the version of ourselves that we want people to see, and then there\u2019s that version that we feel like we\u2019re covering up.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of what\u2019s interesting about playing a character is how much you show,\u201d he says. \u201cMartin Whitly is one of those. We know that he\u2019s a monster, and yet the version that we see of him is someone that\u2019s likable and charming. Clearly that\u2019s not all that\u2019s going on. I do very much enjoy that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProdigal Son\u201d (9 p.m. on Fox) centers around the complicated relationship between the troubled Malcolm, a former FBI profiler who helps the NYPD catch killers, and his incarcerated father \u2014\u00a0 a brilliant doctor known as \u201cThe Surgeon\u201d for his method of despatching his victims.<\/p>\n

\u201cMartin is someone who is obsessed with control. He has deep wells of fury about all kinds of things,\u201d Sheen says. \u201cCertainly some of it is directed towards his loss of control, and Malcolm is the person who served that up, since he\u2019s the one who gave him up to the police. At the same time, he also has deep wells of maybe love \u2014 certainly need \u2014\u00a0 for a relationship with his son.<\/p>\n

\u201cMartin feels like he can keep the two things separate but I don\u2019t think he can,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s just that we rarely see what\u2019s going on underneath. We see this likable persona. Who he really is <\/em>comes out now and again \u2014 and we see it in this episode.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sheen, 51, who divides his time between LA and his native Wales, is known for a wide variety of roles, including prestige award-bait movies<\/a>\u00a0 (\u201cFrost\/Nixon,\u201d \u201cMidnight in Paris,\u201d), commercial blockbusters (the \u201cUnderworld\u201d and \u201cTwilight\u201d franchises,) Amazon\u2019s fantasy show \u201cGood Omens\u201d and Showtime\u2019s period piece \u201cMasters of Sex.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom when I first started out as an actor, the things I was always drawn to are transformations and being able to play as many different types of people as possible,\u201d he says. \u201cFor a long time, though, I realized that was not necessarily the best thing for my career, because people didn\u2019t realize that it was me in lots of different things! But at a certain point you reach critical mass and then people start to enjoy that about you, that you play such different characters. So I\u2019ve always enjoyed variety \u2014 being able to play as many different types of people, and being in as many different types of projects as well, whether it\u2019s independent film or big-budget film or a long running TV series.\u201d<\/p>\n

Season 2 of \u201cProdigal Son\u201d will also feature Catherine Zeta Jones \u2014 whose character, Dr. Vivian Capshaw, will go head to head with Martin. (She\u2019s making her debut later this season.) Alan Cumming will also join the series for a few Season 2 episodes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe grew up in the same place in Wales, next door to each other essentially,\u201d Sheen says of Zeta-Jones. \u201cI was in the local youth theater while she was in the local dance company, so we know a lot of the same people.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve met her family back at home in Wales but I\u2019d never met Catherine,\u201d he says. \u201cOur paths just haven\u2019t crossed. So it\u2019s wonderful to get to meet her. It\u2019s so odd that we have these conversations about people that we both know from 40 years ago. It\u2019s lovely to be able to do that. <\/p>\n
