{"id":168511,"date":"2021-02-02T02:47:14","date_gmt":"2021-02-01T23:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/sham-crypto-exec-busted-for-investor-fraud\/"},"modified":"2021-02-02T02:47:14","modified_gmt":"2021-02-01T23:47:14","slug":"sham-crypto-exec-busted-for-investor-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/sham-crypto-exec-busted-for-investor-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"#Sham crypto exec busted for investor fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Sham crypto exec busted for investor fraud<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/02\/steven-seagal.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>An executive of a pair of sham cryptocurrency companies  \u2014 endorsed by action movie star Steven Seagal \u2014 was busted by the feds Monday for defrauding investors then staging his own dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance.<\/p>\n<p>John DeMarr, 55, of Santa Ana, Calif.,  allegedly used investors\u2019 money to buy a Porsche,  jewelry and renovate his house, the Brooklyn federal complaint states. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs alleged, DeMarr made misrepresentations and false promises that coaxed investors into pouring millions of dollars into fraudulent cryptocurrency schemes, all to facilitate his extravagant lifestyle,\u201d stated Acting US Attorney Seth DuCharme.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said DeMarr, a former private detective, lured his victims into investing in Start Options and Bitcoiin2Gen, which marketed itself as offering B2G digital currency at a price point more accessible than Bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>While Seagal is not criminally charged, he was fined $314,000 last year by the US Securities and Exchange Commission for failing to disclose that he had been paid to promote the now worthless cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint says that Seagal \u201cfalsely claimed on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media<\/a> that B2G would generate an 8,000 percent return for investors within one year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Seagal\u2019s endorsement \u2014 which included online posts encouraging the public \u201cnot to miss out\u201d \u2014 he was promised $250,000 in cash and $750,000 worth of B2G tokens,  according the SEC.<\/p>\n<p>The company even issued a press release headed \u201cZen Master Steven Seagal Has Become the Brand Ambassador of Bitcoiin2Gen\u201d accompanied by a photo of the martial arts star. In promotional material, <\/p>\n<p>Start Options falsely claimed that retired NBA player Andrew Bogut had endorsed the company. In fact, he had no affiliation with the venture and his name and likeness were used without his knowledge, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>None of the investors received any digital tokens and their funds were not used to develop the companies, the complaint states. <\/p>\n<p>In April 2018, DeMarr\u2019s co-conspirator, who is not named in court papers, allegedly vanished with $7 million in investor funds. <\/p>\n<p>To dodge angry investors, DeMarr then staged his own disappearance. He had another co-conspirator issue a statement claiming he had flown to Montenegro, where he was assaulted and robbed of $25 million in B2G tokens before going missing, the complaint alleges.<\/p>\n<p>DeMarr is charged with one count of conspiracy to commit securities fraud for which he faces up to five years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>His defense lawyer, Thomas Sjoblom, didn\u2019t immediately return a request for comment.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
