The world\u2019s smallest reptile is so tiny it could fit on your fingertip but has genitals so big they\u2019re about 20% of its overall size.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Brookesia nana<\/em>\u00a0species of chameleon has been described in a recent study by scientists who were shocked by just how minuscule it is.<\/p>\n

The male of the species is only about half an inch long.<\/p>\n

Females seem to be slightly bigger and the one that\u2019s described in the\u00a0Scientific Reports journal<\/a>\u00a0measured 0.75 inches.<\/p>\n

The male chameleon is now the smallest adult reptile on record.<\/p>\n

It was measured from its nose to its cloaca, which is the hole reptiles use for reproduction and excretion.<\/p>\n

Lead author of the study Frank Glaw told\u00a0Live Science<\/a>: \u201cGiven that the general<\/a> body plan of reptiles is rather similar to that of mammals and humans, it is fascinating to see how miniaturized these organisms and their organs can get.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything does app<\/a>ear miniature on the creature apart from the male genitals which remain inverted inside its body until it\u2019s ready to mate.<\/p>\n

The researchers\u00a0wrote<\/a>: \u201cOne striking feature of miniaturized chameleons is the relatively large size of their genital organs.\u201d<\/p>\n

When they pop out, they\u2019re around 0.1 inches in size.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s about 18.5% of the total body length of the tiny male chameleon.<\/p>\n

Large genital size is mentioned in the scientific study as a trait that\u2019s common among tiny male lizards.<\/p>\n

It might be due to the fact females tend to be larger so the males need large genitals in order to breed successfully.<\/p>\n

The tiny lizards can be found in the rainforests of northern Madagascar.<\/p>\n

Scientists aren\u2019t sure exactly how many there are or whether they\u2019re critically endangered.<\/p>\n

However, the Madagascar rainforest is under threat and there is the worry that these lizards could become victims to factors such as deforestation.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
