At The Washington Post, Mitch Daniels admits defeat<\/a>: All efforts to stop Social Security and Medicare from collapsing are futile, as \u201cour political process is not capable of the kind of decisions that are necessary. The temptation to savage anyone proposing safety-net reform . . . remains electorally irresistible and invariably effective.\u201d That has left us \u201cpast the point of no return\u201d: It\u2019s too late to avoid the coming \u201cmassive, and massively unfair, changes in the promises we have made\u201d even to \u201ccurrent beneficiaries.\u201d Start warning people now, because \u201cif you think confidence in the federal government is shaky now, wait until it starts reneging on these \u2018sacred\u2019 promises.\u201d<\/p>\n

Libertarian: Wage Hike Would Hurt Poor<\/strong><\/p>\n

Team Biden wants to hike the nation\u2019s minimum wage to $15 an hour, yet that, warns Steven Greenhut at The Orange County Register<\/a>, would echo the base rate in the Golden State, which has the highest poverty rate in America. In the last year, \u201cself-service\u201d car washes in California, with \u201cskeletal\u201d crews, have proliferated. \u201cDo you think the wage hikes helped the workers who no longer have jobs?\u201d Fact is, a mandated wage boost hurts \u201cthe least-skilled workers the most.\u201d Low-skill employees lose their jobs because of increased competition from more experienced and higher-skilled employees attracted to the new rates. Such new competition will obliterate entry-level opportunities for those without experience. As the Congressional Budget Office reports, many \u201clow-wage workers would become jobless\u201d \u2014 and fall into poverty.<\/p>\n

Reddit insider: No Regrets<\/strong><\/p>\n

A member of the Reddit forum behind the Game<\/a>Stop frenzy admits anonymously at The New Republic<\/a>, \u201cr\/WallStreetBets is a sewer. \u2018Like 4chan found a Bloomberg Terminal\u2019 is the motto,\u201d and \u201cits population . . . can be repulsive, juvenile, aggressive and outlandish \u2014 which is how they prefer it.\u201d They all know GameStop is \u201cgoing to crash,\u201d but they don\u2019t sell because \u201cthis particular bubble became a call to arms\u201d thanks to the \u201cegregiousness of the greed on display\u201d from the hedge funds that sought to tank the stock. And using the Robinhood app<\/a> \u201cmade \u2018stealing\u2019 from the rich all the more delectable.\u201d Lectures from the big guys on CNBC only \u201csolidified our resolve.\u201d Then Robinhood and even \u201cmajor investment platforms, vehicles for the average investor to take part in legal commerce, closed their doors to us,\u201d while the hedge funds got to keep going. \u201cThe message was unmistakable: If we attacked the wrong people for too long, we\u2019d get shut down.\u201d But they\u2019ve also learned: \u201cWhen unified, we can be a market mover.\u201d<\/p>\n

Otherwise it sends a signal they\u2019re \u201chappy to go from the terrible old days of being ruled by Britain to an equally undesirable situation where they are bossed around by Brussels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leftist: High Cost of #Defund<\/strong><\/p>\n

At National Review, Zaid Jilani spotlights <\/a>a new study in the criminology journal Justice Evaluation on the effects of defunding police on urban safety. The upshot: \u201cRapidly depleting the ranks of a city\u2019s police force can in some circumstances have deadly consequences.\u201d Studying the effects of the Great Recession on two Garden State cities facing police layoffs as a \u00adresult of a budget crunch, the authors found that Jersey City (which avoided police layoffs) continued to witness drops in crime, while in Newark (which had to cull its police force), \u201cviolent-crime rates increased after the layoffs.\u201d #Defund accordingly. <\/p>\n
