“#Poor Things Will Reunite Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

The Favourite<\/em> team of\u00a0Yorgos Lanthimos<\/strong> and Emma Stone<\/strong> are reuniting for\u00a0Poor Things<\/em><\/strong>, based on the book by\u00a0Alasdair Gray. The novel is a send-up of Victorian literature and a re-imagining of\u00a0Frankenstein<\/em>, in which the monster has been replaced with \u201cBella Baxter \u2013 a beautiful young erotomaniac brought back to life with the brain of an infant.\u201d And you have to admit, that already sounds like a\u00a0Yorgos Lanthimos movie.<\/p>\n

The news<\/a> of Poor Things\u00a0<\/em>comes to us from Production Weekly<\/a>\u00a0(by way of The Film Stage<\/a>) which also features this whopper of a synopsis: \u201cOstensibly the memoirs of late-19th-century Glasgow physician Archibald McCandless, the narrative follows the bizarre life of oversexed, volatile Bella Baxter, an emancipated woman, and a female Frankenstein. Bella is not her real name; as Victorian Blessington, she drowned herself to escape her abusive husband, but a surgeon removed the brain from the fetus she was carrying and placed it in her skull, resuscitating her. The revived Bella has the mental age of a child. Engaged to marry McCandless, she chloroforms him and runs off with a shady lawyer who takes her on a whirlwind adventure, hopping from Alexandria to Odessa to a Parisian brothel. As her brain matures, Bella develops a social<\/a> conscience<\/a>, but her rescheduled nuptials to Archie are cut short when she is recognized as Victoria by her lawful husband, Gen. Sir Aubrey Blessington.\u201d
\nThe\u00a0film is based on the Alasdair Gray book of the same name, which is described as a \u201chilarious political allegory and a thought-provoking duel between the desires of men and the independence of women, from one of Scotland\u2019s most accomplished author.\u201d This adaptation is set to be a full-scale\u00a0Favourite<\/em> reunion, because not only are Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone involved, but so is\u00a0Favourite<\/em> writer\u00a0Tony McNamara<\/strong>, who is handling the screenplay adaptation here with\u00a0Lanthimos. The project is set up at Searchlight Pictures, which also distributed\u00a0The Favourite<\/em>.<\/p>\n

All of this sounds pretty damn great, with this material sounding ripe for Lanthimos\u2019 peculiar brand of humor. I\u2019ll confess that I haven\u2019t enjoyed a lot of Lanthimos\u2019 work \u2013 I often find it way too cruel. That said, I thought\u00a0The Favourite<\/em> was fantastic, and the best movie he\u2019s made to date. So if\u00a0Poor Things<\/em> is similar to that movie, I\u2019m all in.<\/p>\n

Production on\u00a0Poor Things\u00a0<\/em>is set to start in the fall of this year, so don\u2019t expect to see it until sometime in 2022.<\/p>\n
