The streaming giant is under fire for casting 35-year-old Carey Mulligan to play a 56-year-old character. <\/p>\n

The 2021 Golden Globe nominee for \u201cPromising Young Woman\u201d also stars in \u201cThe Dig,\u201d based on John Preston\u2019s 2007 novel<\/a> by the same name. It\u2019s inspired by the true story of the excavation of the Sutton Hoo estate in the late 1930s. <\/p>\n

Mulligan portrays Edith Petty, the real-life landowner of the historic site. The more age-appropriate Nicole Kidman, 53, was originally rumored to be in talks for the role \u2014 but Mulligan reportedly replaced her at the last moment. <\/p>\n

Her rushed casting is sparking a conversation about agism online, with many fans expressing dissapointment that a woman in her 50s wasn\u2019t selected. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Dig\u201d also stars 58-year-old Ralph Fiennes and Lily James, 31. Fiennes\u2019 character, Basil Brown, is indeed 5-years younger than Petty in real life. <\/p>\n

Women over the age of 50 are drastically underrepresented in films. Only 1 in 4 flicks pass the \u201cAgeless Test,\u201d according to a 2020 study<\/a> by TENA in partnership\u00a0with the\u00a0Geena Davis\u00a0Institute on Gender in Media at Mount Saint Mary\u2019s University. <\/p>\n

The test requires movies<\/a> to have at least one female character over 50 who is integral to the central plot and whose removal would have a drastic effect, and is presented in a \u201chumanizing\u201d way and does not perpetuate agist stereotypes. <\/p>\n

Researchers found that none of the most popular films of the prior year starred any women who were 50 or over.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
