At the same time, longtime BTC hodlers, known as &#8220;humpbacks&#8221; in reference to their status as the largest and oldest whale investors in the space, are not cashing out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Distribution keeps getting better,&#8221; Woo summarized in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/woonomic\/status\/1356829961559019520\">series of tweets<\/a> on the data.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Rough estimate is 40% of the available supply is controlled by small \/ medium holders\u00a0(&lt;100BTC). This excludes their exposure via institutions (e.g. shares in Grayscale or MicroStrategy).&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-02\/c92aabca-a576-4820-b0e8-30fe2e95ab1a.jpeg\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Bitcoin supply distribution chart. Source: Willy Woo\/ Glassnode<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The numbers serve to alleviate fears of centralization fanned by recent articles in the mainstream press on the back of Bitcoin price rises and associated publicity.<\/p>\n<p>In a piece on Jan. 31, Bloomberg used a report from research entity Token Analyst to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-31\/bitcoin-s-network-operations-are-controlled-by-five-companies\">claim<\/a> that &#8220;Bitcoin\u2019s infrastructure is more centralized than ever before,&#8221; and that this was &#8220;raising alarms about the security and viability of what is championed as a decentralized network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In late December, Forbes <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rogerhuang\/2021\/12\/29\/the-chinese-mining-centralization-of-bitcoin-and-ethereum\/\">targeted<\/a> mining as an alleged victim of &#8220;Chinese centralization.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Proponents meanwhile continue to highlight Bitcoin as the antidote to the centralization which has undermined fiat currencies around the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How did we get to this point? Centralization, complacency, and a detachment from monetary reality,&#8221; commentator Marty Bent wrote in his latest <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tftc.io\/martys-bent\/issue-920\/\">blog post<\/a> on Feb. 1.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Trader_Big_buyers_will_sell_eventually\"><\/span>Trader: Big buyers will sell eventually<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A minor preoccupation nonetheless remains the impact of major selling on distribution should new institutional buyers choose to take profit.<\/p>\n<p>For popular trader Scott Melker, such a scenario is a matter of &#8220;if,&#8221; not &#8220;when,&#8221; and the idea that institutions will hodl ad infinitum is a myth.<\/p>\n<p>Both MicroStrategy and Grayscale added to their positions this week, the former purchasing 295 BTC on Tuesday while the latter&#8217;s Bitcoin assets under management now total $22.5 billion.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2021-02\/b39db422-2554-4b3d-a614-c13ba718ed3e.jpg\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Grayscale BTC holdings. Source: Bybt.com<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Regardless of all of the reports surfacing about hedge funds exploring Bitcoin, it is our belief most are going to lock in profit at some point, whether they own GBTC or custody their own coins.
