during a production ramp-up.<\/p>\n<p> The extraordinarily candid interview \u2014 even for an extraordinarily candid CEO like Musk \u2014 with engineering consultant Sandy Munro aired Tuesday on the \u201cMunro Live\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> channel and podcast.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n wsj-article-caption\"><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Musk had a blunt answer when asked about quality control issues:  \u201cIt took us a while to kind of iron out the production process. Friends ask me: \u2018When should I buy a Tesla?\u2019 And I\u2019m like: \u2018Well, either buy it right at the beginning, or when the production reaches a steady state. During that production ramp, it\u2019s super hard to be in vertical climb mode and get everything right on the little details.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Paint issues also cropped up in December, Musk said, in the push to produce as many cars as possible before year\u2019s end.  \u201cOne of the things that was h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening when we were ramping production was the paint wasn\u2019t necessarily drying enough,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, it\u2019s like, if you go faster\u2026 it\u2019s like, you just discover these things. Like, If we knew them in advance, we would fix them in advance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cProduction is hell,\u201d Musk said.<\/p>\n<p>That could be worrying to future buyers, since Tesla<br \/>\n        TSLA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203558040\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.07%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       plans to open new factories in Texas and Germany in the coming months, and start production of the Cybertruck pickup and the Semi big rig by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also see: <\/strong> Apple may build a fully autonomous electric car with Hyundai-Kia: report <\/p>\n<p>During <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QCIo8e12sBM&amp;feature=youtu.be\" class=\"icon none\">a harsh 2018 teardown<\/a>, Munro compared Tesla\u2019s Model 3 sedan with a shoddy, 1990s-era Kia.  \u201cI can\u2019t imagine how they released this,\u201d he said at the time. (Munro <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pAS-yjWj9DY&amp;feature=emb_logo\" class=\"icon none\">later came around<\/a> and liked later versions of the Model 3.)<\/p>\n<p>In the interview, Musk said he agreed with Munro.  \u201cI thought your criticism was accurate,\u201d Musk said. <\/p>\n<p>Musk also admitted the seats in early versions of the Model S were terrible, \u201cprobably had the worst seat of any car I ever sat in,\u201d Musk said, noting he used to call the seat a \u201cstone toadstool.\u201d That spurred a much more comfortable seat design in the Model 3, which Munro complimented.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Munro isn\u2019t the only one to criticize Tesla\u2019s quality. Consumer Reports last year ranked Tesla second from the bottom on a reliability survey.  \u201cOnly the Model 3 sedan is reliable,\u201d Consumer Reports said in November, knocking the Model S, Model X SUV and Model Y compact SUV as subpar.<\/p>\n<p>That hasn\u2019t hurt Tesla much though. The company delivered nearly 500,000 vehicles last year, and analysts expect that number to grow to 800,000 this year.
