Country artist Morgan Wallen has been disqualified from performing at or receiving any recognition during the upcoming Academy of Country Music Awards, the organization announced Wednesday, as the star continues to face backlash for a viral video showing him hurling a racial slur in front of friends.<\/p>\n

The first round of voting for the awards show, which is slated to be broadcast April 18, has already closed. Wallen\u2019s name will be removed from the contest\u2019s second round of voting, which is set to open Feb. 10, according to the ACM.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Academy of Country Music will halt Morgan Wallen\u2019s potential involvement and eligibility for this year\u2019s 56th<\/sup>\u00a0Academy of Country Music Awards cycle,\u201d a statement from the Academy reads<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Academy does not condone or support intolerance or behavior that doesn\u2019t align with our commitment and dedication to diversity and inclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ACM, which hosts the smaller of country music\u2019s two major awards shows behind November\u2019s Country Music Association Awards, also announced that it would remove all of Wallen\u2019s digital content from its website. <\/p>\n

The 27-year-old won the CMA award for \u201cBest New Artist\u201d last year. <\/p>\n

Wallen was also suspended \u201cindefinitely\u201d<\/a> by his record label earlier Wednesday after TMZ first reported<\/a> on a video that showed the Tennessee native saying the N-word following a night of drinking in Nashville.<\/p>\n

His radio airplay took a major hit this week following the scandal \u2014 dropping close to 80 percent after iHeartRadio and Cumulus Media<\/a>, the country\u2019s two largest radio chains, instructed their stations to stop playing Wallen\u2019s music, according to a report in Variety.<\/p>\n

Wallen apologized for the incident<\/a> Wednesday, calling his actions \u201cunacceptable and inapp<\/a>ropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m embarrassed and sorry. I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back,\u201d he said in a statement\u00a0to Entertainment Tonight<\/a>. \u201cThere are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better.\u201d<\/p>\n

It remains unclear whether Wallen will be barred from future awards shows, including this year\u2019s CMA Awards.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
