Lawmakers want to make pizza Connecticut\u2019s official state food \u2014 cheesing off slice lovers in New York and New Jersey, who say the state needs to \u201csit down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Patricia Dillon and Sen. Gary Winfield, both Democrats from New Haven, have proposed a bill to recognize\u00a0Connecticut as a hotspot for tasty pizza joints,\u00a0Dillon told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cPizza is great in Connecticut \u2014\u00a0 it\u2019s super! \u2014 and we don\u2019t really have chains. It\u2019s more family-owned restaurants, and it\u2019s a community thing.\u00a0You don\u2019t eat pizza alone,\u201d she said, adding that she\u2019s a fan of Sally\u2019s Apizza in New Haven.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ate my first slice ever in Times Square. I don\u2019t pretend to be an expert on New York or New Jersey pizza \u2014 but there\u2019s no question in my mind that Connecticut\u2019s pizza is better. It has more flavor,\u201d she insisted.<\/p>\n

After news<\/a> of the bill emerged, New Yorkers took to social media<\/a> to slam the pizza flex as nothing but pie in the sky.<\/p>\n

\u201cWalk before you run. First learn how to make pizza,\u201d one observer blasted on Twitter.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re kidding right?\u201d a pizza-proud New Yorker scoffed,\u00a0while another user added<\/a>, \u00a0 \u201cThe only other state that can have pizza is New York.\u00a0Connecticut needs to sit down.\u201d<\/p>\n

The account @NJGov \u2014\u00a0 which bills itself the OFFICIAL Twitter of the Garden State \u2014 tweeted<\/a> simply. \u201cNO.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNew Jersey is the pizza capital of the world. Period,\u201d\u00a0a social media manager for Gov. Phil Murphy and @NJGov told The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt simply doesn\u2019t make sense for a state that does not produce the world\u2019s best pizza to make pizza their official state food.\u201d<\/p>\n

But many Connecticut residents quickly came to their state\u2019s defense, insisting that Connecticut chefs do have serious pizza skills, no matter which way\u00a0you slice it.<\/p>\n

\u201cSally\u2019s and Frank Pepe\u2019s are two of the best pizzerias in the country. It\u2019s a bit much for CT to make pizza the state food, but when it comes to pizza, CT\u2019s got game<\/a>,\u201d one observer wrote.<\/p>\n

Amy Holden Jones,\u00a0screenwriter of the Connecticut-based film \u201cMystic Pizza,\u201d even joined the online pizza war. <\/p>\n

\u201cAs the person who sat down and wrote #mysticpizza<\/a> I endorse this move,\u201d she tweeted \u2014 prompting one user to fire back, \u201cIt is a fiction that there is good pizza in CT, yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The legislation, Proposed House Bill 5656, would amend chapter 33 of the Connecticut general<\/a> statues to \u201crecognize the contribution of pizza to the state\u2019s cuisine and economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dillon\u00a0said the bill is meant to celebrate the cuisine-based \u201cjoy that we have\u201d in Connecticut at a time when most news lately, including coverage of the coronavirus pandemic, has been grim.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
