Since then,\u00a0Viber has changed and evolved into a messaging app too.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0WhatsApp released its new controversial privacy policy last month, there has been a lot of talk about finding alternatives to the Facebook-owned app. Most of these conversations have revolved around Telegram and Signal. However, Viber has built a strong case for itself by establishing itself in non-western markets.<\/p>\n<p>I talked to the company\u2019s CEO, Djamel Agaoua, about the app\u2019s business model, operations, and how it plans to target a different audience than Telegram and Signal. But before we jump into that, let\u2019s take a quick look at the app\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"History\"><\/span>History<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Viber was founded in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6bc24706-9555-11e3-8371-00144feab7de\">2010 by Talmon Marco and Igor Magazinnik<\/a>, who worked together in the\u00a0Israel defence force. Initially, the app just focused on person-to-person calling to compete with the likes of Skype.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, the company began to develop the app as a messaging product with features such as stickers. It uses some concepts of Open Whisper protocol used in Signal, but the app claims that its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.viber.com\/app\/uploads\/Viber-Encryption-Overview.pdf\">source code for encryption is different<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_Viber_make_money\"><\/span>How does Viber make money?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Chat apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram have gained popularity, but they haven\u2019t made a lot of money. WhatsApp\u2019s new policy aims to change that, and Telegram wants to experiment with ads after <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/5\/12\/21256407\/telegram-cryptocurrency-shutdown-sec-gram\">a failed ICO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Viber broke even in Q4 2019 and registered a full year of profitability in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>It has a host of services to offer in one app. You can think of it as a mash-up of WhatsApp and Telegram. It has private chat that\u2019s end-to-end encrypted, and it has public groups without encryption.<\/p>\n<p>The app also lets you call any phone number \u2014 even the ones that don\u2019t use Viber \u2014 with a subscription plan. Agaoua said that its most popular plan costs $7 and lets you call people in 50 countries covering 75% population of the world. The firm started this service four years ago and lets local stores and services chat with customers through its platform. Currently, it\u2019s available in Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Greece, and Bulgaria, but Viber plans to expand it to more countries.<\/p>\n<p>This is similar to what Facebook is trying to do with WhatsApp Business. According to the Wall Street Journal, the app already has more than <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/whatsapps-business-user-base-grew-tenfold-from-2019-11594298961\">50 million monthly active users<\/a>, with some notable partnerships such as Reliance Jio Mart for grocery delivery in India.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-featured_img wp-image-1288038 lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"419\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/04\/JioMart-WhatsApp-Ordering-hed-796x419.jpg\" data-lazy=\"true\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/04\/JioMart-WhatsApp-Ordering-hed-796x419.jpg 796w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/04\/JioMart-WhatsApp-Ordering-hed-280x147.jpg 280w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/04\/JioMart-WhatsApp-Ordering-hed-513x270.jpg 513w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/04\/JioMart-WhatsApp-Ordering-hed-257x135.jpg 257w, https:\/\/cdn0.tnwcdn.com\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2020\/04\/JioMart-WhatsApp-Ordering-hed-1592x838.jpg 1592w\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The last 20% of Viber\u2019s revenue comes from ads placed in its app. The company claims that it uses only your IP based-location, age, and gender to show ads. And you have an option to ask the app to not use your age or gender for targeted ads.<\/p>\n<p>If you go by numbers, Viber is probably one of the top five messengers in the world by user-base. Agaoua said it has 240-250 million monthly active users and 170 to 180 million daily active users.<\/p>\n<p>Viber has largely made its mark in non-western countries. In\u00a0<span>Ukraine, Belarus, Greece, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Serbia, the company claims to have more than 90% of the market share in messaging apps; in places such as Russia, Iraq, and Myanmar it has 40-50% penetration. The firm said that expats from these countries also use Viber to connect with their families back home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Criticism_of_Telegram_WhatsApp_and_Signal\"><\/span>Criticism of Telegram, WhatsApp, and Signal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Viber has tried to distance itself from Facebook as much as possible. Last year, it pulled all its ads from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2020\/jun\/25\/exclusive-viber-severs-ties-with-facebook-in-growing-boycott\">Facebook and Instagram<\/a>. It also removed its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phonearena.com\/news\/Viber-boycotts-Facebook_id125560\">integration with GIF searching platform GIPHY<\/a>, which was bought by Facebook last year.<\/p>\n<p>The company believes it has a better feature set than WhatsApp, and it can serve its users well without collecting a ton of data.<\/p>\n<p>Agaoua has a lot more respect for Signal, but he worries about its sustainability:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Signal is a good product which is made well. We respect its <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>. It has a straight-to-the-point app with all the basic features. However, the key question about this company is sustainability.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Currently, the app is managed by a non-profit foundation and is supported by donations, including <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/signal-foundation-whatsapp-brian-acton\/\">$50 million by WhatsApp\u2019s co-founder<\/a>, Brian Acton. He says that the app is not an alternative to WhatsApp when it comes to privacy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You can search for stuff like cocaine and heroin on Telegram, and none of that is moderated or banned. White supremacists also use Telegram to organize revolutions. I would let my kids use WhatsApp, but not Telegram.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that Viber has a similar function in terms of public groups. Admins will have to specifically invite you to these chats to join.<\/p>\n<p>However, you can\u2019t search for groups. Plus, the company claims that it uses AI to ban content related to drugs, porn, weapons, or hate speech. However, AI\u2019s track record for moderation is not perfect and it could be fooled by slight modification towords.<\/p>\n<p>Agaoua admits that Viber\u2019s AI is not perfect, but he says the firm is spending millions of dollars every year to improve that technology.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_road_ahead\"><\/span>What\u2019s the road ahead?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Viber is realistic about its growth goals. It says that while it has seen an increase in downloads in various parts of the world, it would have to wait for a couple of months to see if these users are here to stay.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than branching out in new countries, the company wants to introduce new services in the places it\u2019s already dominating. For instance, introducing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nepalitelecom.com\/2020\/12\/esewa-and-viber-partnership-payment.html\">payment services<\/a> in Nepal, Hungary, and Ukraine. The company is planning to launch cross-border payments too, so people living in other countries can send money back home.<\/p>\n<p><span>Compared to WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal, Agaoua says Viber is<\/span>\u00a0more secure, the company is more sustainable, and offers all services other messengers can.
