“#Taika Waititi\u2019s Piki Films to Develop Three Indigenous Projects About Colonization<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Taika Waititi<\/strong> is giving a boost to indigenous voices with his production banner Piki Films\u2019 new initiative focusing on stories about colonization.\u00a0Waititi and Carthew Neal\u2019s production company Piki Films is developing three projects with Maori writers, each of which will tackle the effects of colonization.<\/p>\n

ScreenDaily\u00a0reports that Waititi and Neal\u2019s New Zealand producton company Piki Films is launching new projects from indigenous writers that will focus on the effects of colonization. The company is working on two feature films and a TV series<\/a>, all headed by\u00a0Maori writers. Neal will lead the development of these projects alongside producer Morgan Waru.<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s not yet determined how deeply Waititi and Neal will be involved in each project, they\u2019ve both had producer or executive producer credits on Piki titles not directed by Waititi, such as 2018\u2019s\u00a0The Breaker Upperers<\/em>. Regardless, having Waititi\u2019s name attached will give a definite boost to these three new projects.<\/p>\n

The first project is a film adaptation of\u00a0Tina Makereti\u2019s novel\u00a0The Imaginary Lives Of James Poneke<\/em>, which tells the story of \u201ca\u00a0Maori teenager in the 1840s who travel<\/a>s to London to app<\/a>ear as a live exhibit among other Maori artifacts. He initially enjoys the attention and hedonism of London, but soon discovers he can\u2019t get past being labelled as a savage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt seems strangely timely to see this story developed into a film, as we witness the toppling of colonial statues and attitudes,\u201d\u00a0said Makereti in a statement.<\/p>\n

The second project is a feature adaptation of\u00a0Angella Dravid\u2019s stand-up comedy show\u00a0Down The Rabbit Hole<\/em>, which tells her true story of her running away to the other side of the world to marry a man three times her age, before she eventually lands in a female prison in the U.K.\u00a0Briar Grace-Smith (Waru<\/em>) will write the script with Dravid.<\/p>\n

The third project is a crime series\u00a0Better The Blood<\/em>, which follows \u201can obsessive Maori detective as she hunts down an indigenous serial killer revenging the wrongs of New Zealand\u2019s colonizers.\u201d Created by Michael Bennett and Jane Holland, who recently collaborated on the acclaimed New Zealand 2018 TV film\u00a0In Dark Places<\/em>, this is the only TV series of the new projects.<\/p>\n

Piki\u2019s new initiative comes amid the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement, which has not only sparked discussions about race in regards to Black people, but in the lingering aftermath of colonization \u2014 embodied in the statues of colonialists that are being torn down around the world alongside renowned Confederate general<\/a>s in the United States. A statue of British colonialist George Hamilton was removed this month\u00a0in New Zealand.<\/p>\n
