\n Foreign desk: Trump Unleashes His China Hawks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Team Trump officials tell The Washington Post\u2019s Josh Rogin that the president \u201chas evolved on China\u201d after seeing \u201chow Beijing handled the COVID-19 crisis,\u201d which \u201chas easily cost the US economy several trillion dollars\u201d and \u201ccould have been avoided if China had contained the virus or, at least, been honest about it.\u201d His \u201cattitude shift has freed the China hawks on his team to launch a new, widespread campaign against the Chinese Communist Party and its ideology.\u201d Robert O\u2019Brien, the national-security adviser, recently delivered a Cold War-style speech; the secretary of state, attorney general<\/a> and FBI director will soon follow, and their agencies will \u201cpush back on various Chinese bad actions throughout the summer.\u201d Some may see it as an election-year ploy, but \u201cthese moves to call out the Chinese Communist Party for what it is and protect ourselves . . . are important and overdue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandemic journal: The Spike That Wasn\u2019t<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cCoronavirus doomsayers\u201d just couldn\u2019t wait to make \u201capocalyptic announcements,\u201d Heather Mac Donald quips at The Spectator USA: Establishment media<\/a> are claiming \u201ca dangerous spike in coronavirus cases.\u201d In reality, the highest number of new daily cases came on April 24 \u2014 and while we are facing rising cases, we\u2019re also seeing \u201csteadily dropping daily death numbers.\u201d For the media, alas, that\u2019s \u201cno news<\/a>\u201d: Instead, they\u2019re blasting reopened Texas and Arizona \u2014 but have \u201cgone silent\u201d on Georgia, whose death toll has decreased since reopening. Meanwhile, we have \u201cno crises in hospital capacity,\u201d and many states \u201care seeing cases decline or hold steady.\u201d Americans have to reject the media\u2019s call to \u201chalt the still far-too-tentative reopenings\u201d \u2014 or we\u2019ll risk destroying \u201cany \u00adremaining hope of restoring our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iconoclast: The Wokest \u2018Reactionary\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just because \u201cthe past was unlike the present,\u201d says The Week\u2019s Matthew Walther, doesn\u2019t mean \u201cwe should never denounce historical evils, much less fail to celebrate those who had the good sense to see them clearly at the time.\u201d Case in point: the 18th-century English literary genius Samuel Johnson \u2014 \u201ca reactionary crank\u201d even by the standards of his own time, who nevertheless radically opposed slavery. Johnson \u00addenounced English plantations in Jamaica, and his abolitionism wasn\u2019t just a matter of words: \u201cJohnson\u2019s valet Francis Barber was a freed black Jamaican who eventually became his heir, an astonishing bequest that was widely \u00adreported in the English press at the time.\u201d What drove his views was \u201chis deep religious faith.\u201d Simply put, \u201cJohnson could not stand to see \u2018black men .\u2009.\u2009. repining under English cruelty\u2019 for the simple reason that he \u00adbelieved human beings are made lovingly in the image of God.\u201d<\/p>\n

History lesson: Yes, Lincoln Freed the Slaves<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to The New York Times\u2019 Jamelle Bouie, \u201cneither Abraham Lincoln nor the Republican Party freed the slaves\u201d \u2014 a \u201cfalsehood\u201d so egregious, National Review\u2019s Dan McLaughlin seethes, that it\u2019s \u201ca species of gaslighting.\u201d Yes, \u201cblack Americans played a significant role\u201d in abolition. \u201cHad Lincoln lost the 1860 election,\u201d though, we \u201ccould not possibly have\u201d abolished slavery by 1865: As president, he made the \u201cepochal decision\u201d to confirm that the Union Army, under the command of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, was fighting for emancipation, and his fellow Republicans pushed through the 13th Amendment. Bouie really just wants to \u201ctopple Lincoln and Grant from their pedestals\u201d and deny them \u201call credit for their successes and failures.\u201d But \u201chistory matters,\u201d and truth matters \u2014 and \u201cwe need not play along\u201d with such attempts to \u201crewrite it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Science<\/a> Desk: A Black-Hole Collision Like No Other<\/strong><\/p>\n

Detecting colliding black holes has become so routine, The Atlantic\u2019s Marina Koren reports, astronomers usually \u201cgo back to sleep\u201d when they receive alerts about them. But last week, researchers \u201cannounced they have spotted what might be a spark from the collision of two faraway black holes\u201d \u2014 a discovery that could \u201cmark the first time that astronomers have captured light produced by the joining of the darkest objects in the universe.\u201d As one scientist told Koren, \u201cthe flare \u2018is illuminating the invisible\u2019 [and] \u2018providing light in a region where something fascinating has happ<\/a>ened\u2019\u200a\u201d \u2014 something usually shrouded in the darkness of objects whose gravity is so intense, not even light can escape them.<\/p>\n
