Universal\u2019s attempt to revive their classic monsters continues with a new take on\u00a0Dracula<\/em><\/strong>, but this doesn\u2019t sound like any other\u00a0Dracula<\/em> movie we\u2019ve seen before. The studio has hired Chloe Zhao<\/strong>, director of\u00a0Nomadland<\/em> and the upcoming Marvel movie\u00a0Eternals<\/em>, to adapt the classic tale of the bloodsucking count. Zhao\u2019s app<\/a>roach will be a\u00a0futuristic, sci-fi Western take on the material. Yes, really.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m pretty sure none of us ever expected to see a sci-fi Western\u00a0Dracula<\/em>, but here we are! THR<\/a> broke the news<\/a>, reporting that Chloe Zhao is directing a new\u00a0Dracula<\/em> and that it\u2019ll be a \u201cfuturistic, sci-fi Western\u201d that will focus on themes of \u201cbeing on society\u2019s fringes.\u201d Regarding the news, Zhao said: \u201cI\u2019ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other they embody. I\u2019m very excited to work with Donna, Peter, and the team at Universal to reimagine such a beloved character.\u201d
\nUniversal Pictures president, Peter Cramer added: \u201cChlo\u00e9\u2019s singular lens shines a light on stories of the overlooked and misunderstood. We are thrilled to be working with her as she reimagines one of the most iconic outsider characters ever created.\u201d\u00a0Zhao will write, direct and produce the movie through her production company Highwayman.<\/p>\n

I honestly have\u00a0no idea<\/em> what a futuristic sci-fi Western\u00a0Dracula<\/em> looks like. Does Dracula wear a cowboy hat? Does he shoot lasers? Is Renfield a robot? I guess we\u2019ll see!\u00a0Dracula<\/em>, Bram Stoker\u2019s classic 1897 novel about a vampire who travel<\/a>s from Transylvania to London, has been adapted to the screen countless times. But a sci-fi Western take on the material will certainly bring fresh blood to a tale everyone likely knows by heart by now. The closest anyone has come to making a Western\u00a0Dracula<\/em> is probably the 1966 oddity\u00a0Billy the Kid Versus Dracula<\/em>, and I\u2019m going to go out on a limb here and guess that Zhao\u2019s film will be different than that.<\/p>\n

Zhao\u2019s\u00a0Dracula<\/em> is the latest entry in Universal\u2019s growing list of movies<\/a> that dip into their stable of classic monsters. They tried to launch an entire cinematic universe with 2017\u2019s\u00a0The Mummy<\/em> starring Tom Cruise. However, that film fizzled, and Universal pulled the plug on the shared universe idea. However, they didn\u2019t give up entirely. The studio teamed with Blumhouse and director Leigh Whannell for\u00a0The Invisible Man<\/em>, a film that was a hit with both critics and audiences.<\/p>\n

Since the release of\u00a0The Invisible Man<\/em>, Universal has announced a slew of upcoming monster-themed movies. There\u2019s\u00a0Invisible Woman<\/em>\u00a0from director Elizabeth Banks (despite the title, it\u2019s\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0related to Whannell\u2019s\u00a0Invisible Man<\/em>); Paul Feig\u2019s\u00a0Dark Army<\/em>, which is said to feature classic Universal monsters;\u00a0The Monster Mash<\/em>, which we don\u2019t really know a whole lot about; an\u00a0untitled project\u00a0from James Wan; a new take on\u00a0The Wolfman<\/em>\u00a0starring Ryan Gosling and directed by\u00a0Invisible Man<\/em>\u00a0filmmaker Leigh Whannell; and an untitled monster movie from Lord & Miller starring Channing Tatum.<\/p>\n

On the Dracula front, the studio was also considering\u00a0the\u00a0Dracula<\/em>\u00a0spin-off\u00a0Renfield<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>from director\u00a0Dexter Fletcher, but it\u2019s unclear if that will still move forward. And speaking of\u00a0Dracula<\/em>, last year word broke that\u00a0Destroyer<\/em> filmmaker Karyn Kusama was going to direct a\u00a0Dracula<\/em> movie for Blumhouse. That project was\u00a0not<\/em> officially at Universal, though, and I\u2019ve confirmed through a source close to the project that Kusama\u2019s\u00a0Dracula<\/em> is still happening. You might think that\u2019s one too many\u00a0Dracula<\/em>s, but I personally would love to have both a Chloe Zhao\u00a0Dracula<\/em> and a Karyn Kusama\u00a0Dracula<\/em>, because they\u2019re both such fantastic filmmakers who will no doubt bring something new to their respective films.
