What do we know about it?<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                            Vaxx Populi: Trials are ongoing, which allow a window into how well Novavax&#8217;s vaccine stands up to emerging variants of COVID-19\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Feb. 2, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada will start producing COVID-19 vaccines.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWe\u2019ve signed a memorandum of understanding with Novavax to produce their COVID-19 vaccine at the new NRC [National Research Council] Royalmount facility in Montreal,\u201d the PM said. \u201cPending Health Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roval, tens of millions of Novavax COVID-19 doses will be made right here at home.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But no one should expect made-in-Canada doses any time soon. The NRC centre is still being expanded and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-canadas-vaccine-procurement-efforts-have-been-shrouded-in-unjustified\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will need to be configured<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Novavax\u2019s production specifics. And all of those steps require regulatory approval, meaning it\u2019s unlikely it will produce doses until near the end of the year at the earliest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0AstraZeneca is likely the next vaccine coming to Canada. What do we know about it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As yet,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Novavax vaccine\u2014a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/health\/novavax-explainer-1.5897946\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protein-based vaccine that uses lab-grown spike proteins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to mimic those of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and which instruct <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/health\/novavax-covid-19-vaccine.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our body\u2019s immune system to make antibodies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014hasn\u2019t been <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/science\/coronavirus-vaccine-tracker.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved for use anywhere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Health Canada <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/drugs-health-products\/covid19-industry\/drugs-vaccines-treatments\/authorization\/applications.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received Novavax\u2019s data application<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for approval on Jan. 29.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novavax is a small firm relative to other vaccine producers such as AstraZeneca and Pfizer. In 2019, before being chosen to participate in the U.S. Operation Warp Speed vaccine program, its value was just US$250 million, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-health-coronavirus-novavax-executives\/novavax-bosses-cash-out-for-46-million-with-covid-19-vaccine-trials-still-under-way-idUKKBN29G1AR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Now, it is worth<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">US$19 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phase 3 trial of Novavax\u2019s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NVX-CoV2373 vaccine was<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">completed in the U.K. with 15,000 participants, including 27 per cent aged 65 and older.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other trials are still ongoing:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>RELATED:\u00a0Why is Pfizer asking Canada to draw more vaccine doses from each vial?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while the research continues, when Novavax released some interim findings in late January, its CEO said that it is gearing up production: \u201cWe should be at full capacity starting in May or June, maybe as much as 150 million doses per month globally,\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-vaccine-novavax-idUSKBN29Y2WP?taid=6014868e02313500018f1efe&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem:+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said Stanley Erck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a breakdown of what we know about the vaccine:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_many_doses_of_the_Novavax_vaccine_do_you_need\"><\/span><b>How many doses of the Novavax vaccine do you need?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two doses given 21 days apart is how the vaccine is being tested in the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04611802\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large U.S. phase 3 trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_its_efficacy\"><\/span><b>What is its efficacy?\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, the caveats: trials are still ongoing, and full peer-reviewed studies haven\u2019t been published, so this interim data from Jan. 29 will change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall efficacy: 89.3 per cent<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Efficacy against the old strain of COVID-19: 95.6 per cent<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Efficacy against the British variant (B.1.1.7): 85.6 per cent<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Efficacy against the South African variant (B.1.351): 49.4 per cent (60 per cent for HIV-negative volunteers)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LawrenceGostin\/status\/1356368562512928770?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts note<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that as this vaccine is being tested while more contagious variants are circulating, its efficacy may not be directly comparable to those of earlier vaccines, such as Pfizer and Moderna, whose clinical data was gathered before the mutations were widely circulating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0How much protection does the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine provide?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Have_there_been_any_severe_outcomes\"><\/span><b>Have there been any severe outcomes?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s still unclear, though the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.novavax.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/novavax-covid-19-vaccine-demonstrates-893-efficacy-uk-phase-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first interim analysis of the British trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicated no severe cases of COVID-19 in vaccinated participants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As noted in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaxx Populi post on the AstraZeneca vaccine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this initial result shouldn\u2019t be underestimated. \u201cI don\u2019t actually care about infections. I care about hospitalizations and deaths and long-term complications,\u201d Dr. Ashish Jha, the dean of the Brown University school of public health, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/01\/briefing\/vaccination-myanmar-coup-rochester-police.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Times <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noted that, \u201cof the roughly 75,000 people <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jnj.com\/johnson-johnson-announces-single-shot-janssen-covid-19-vaccine-candidate-met-primary-endpoints-in-interim-analysis-of-its-phase-3-ensemble-trial\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who have<\/span><\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/mcm-legal-regulatory-and-policy-framework\/moderna-covid-19-vaccine-frequently-asked-questions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received<\/span><\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/mcm-legal-regulatory-and-policy-framework\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-frequently-asked-questions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of<\/span><\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.novavax.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/novavax-covid-19-vaccine-demonstrates-893-efficacy-uk-phase-3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the five<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Novavax and Johnson &amp; Johnson] <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/12\/30\/world\/europe\/uk-covid-19-vaccine-oxford-astrazeneca.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a research trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not a single person has died from COVID, and only a few people appear to have been hospitalized. None have remained hospitalized 28 days after receiving a shot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_the_advantages_of_this_vaccine\"><\/span><b>What are the advantages of this vaccine?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are lots of seniors enrolled in its trials, unlike those of some other vaccines, such as the one from AstraZeneca; this is important given that the older age group is at much higher risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19. And its big trials are occurring now, which means experts get to see how it holds up against the new variants of concern, unlike other vaccines, which were tested earlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has standard refrigeration storage requirements, like the AstraZeneca vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0I\u2019m immunocompromised. Can I get the COVID-19 vaccine?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Are_there_any_%E2%80%9Cknown_unknowns%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><b>Are there any \u201cknown unknowns\u201d?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts will want to see final data,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in particular to determine how<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well the Novavax vaccine stands up against the British and South African variants (as explained in the Efficacy and Concerns sections).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_many_doses_of_Novavax_has_Canada_ordered\"><\/span><b>How many doses of Novavax has Canada ordered?\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.novavax.com\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/novavax-and-government-canada-finalize-advance-purchase\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 76 million doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an order for 52 million doses, plus an option to buy another 24 million)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Are_there_any_concerns_with_this_vaccine\"><\/span><b>Are there any concerns with this vaccine?<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest concern right now for all the COVID-19 vaccines is how well they stand up to the new variants that are rapidly becoming dominant strains around the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A real-world test occurred last fall, during the phase 2b trial in South Africa of 4,400 participants. During that time, B.1.351 became the dominant variant in the nation (92.4 per cent of all genomically sequenced COVID-19 cases in the trial were of that strain). For the 94 per cent of the participants who were HIV-negative, the efficacy of the Novavax vaccine was 60 per cent, falling to 49.4 per cent for all participants.
