Leave it to James Gunn<\/strong> to dig deep in the DC Comics canon to find a new obscure superhero to add to the\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em><\/strong> ensemble.\u00a0Nhut Le<\/strong> has been cast in the HBO Max\u00a0The Suicide Squad<\/em> spin-off as Judomaster, joining a cast that is led by John Cena<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Deadline broke the news<\/a> that Nhut Le will be playing Judomaster in\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em>, the upcoming HBO Max spin-off series<\/a> of James Gunn\u2019s follow-up film to David Ayer\u2019s 2016 comic book movie\u00a0Suicide Squad<\/em>.
\nThis is app<\/a>arently the year for Judomaster, a somewhat obscure DC character who makes his live-action debut in\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em> after an\u00a0un-costumed Rip Jagger (the first of three characters to take on the mantle of Judomaster) makes his film debut in the 2021 animated film\u00a0Batman: Soul of the Dragon.<\/i><\/p>\n

Created by Joe Gill and Frank McLaughlin, Judomaster first appeared in Charlton Comics\u00a0Special War Series<\/i>\u00a0#4 back in November 1965. He was originally known as\u00a0Hadley \u201cRip\u201d Jagger, a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. The character was ultimately sold to DC, and became a member of the\u00a0All-Star Squadron, DC\u2019s team of superheroes during World War II, although he has never appeared in an actual published story as a member of the team. A\u00a0new Judomaster created by Paul Kupperberg and\u00a0Michael Collins would debut in\u00a0Justice League \u00a0Quarterly<\/i>\u00a0#14 (1994), but a revival of Rip Jagger and\u00a0Gail Simone\u2019s creation of the female Judomaster, Sonia Sato (appearing in Birds of Prey<\/em> #100<\/em>), sent this version to comic book limbo.<\/p>\n

Gunn has made a practice of working his movie magic on lesser-known comic book characters \u2014 famously turning the Guardians of the Galaxy into some of the most beloved characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe \u2014 and will likely do the same with\u00a0The Suicide Squad<\/em> and its HBO Max spin-off\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em>. Judomaster is certainly an obscure-enough character that Gunn can do with it as he wishes, so it\u2019s difficult to know what to expect with the character.<\/p>\n

As for Le, he\u2019s mostly known for a recurring role on\u00a0Comedy Central\u2019s\u00a0The Kroll Show<\/em>, appearing as Inuit Andy between\u00a02013 to 2015. His most recent credit is the Disney Channel TV series\u00a0Raven\u2019s Home<\/em> in 2018.<\/p>\n

HBO Max first\u00a0announced the\u00a0Peacemaker<\/em>\u00a0series\u00a0in September, as part of the WarnerMedia<\/a> streaming platform\u2019s strategy to\u00a0spin off its DC properties\u00a0into TV shows that will bring more eyes, and more subscribers, to its service. But Gunn was already ready with a lockdown-written script, and the series quickly came together, with Cena boarding the project alongside\u00a0Danielle Brooks<\/strong>\u00a0(Orange is the New Black<\/em>),\u00a0Robert Patrick<\/strong>\u00a0(Terminator 2: Judgment Day<\/em>),\u00a0Jennifer Holland<\/strong>\u00a0(Brightburn<\/em>), and\u00a0Chris Conrad<\/strong>\u00a0(Patriot<\/em>), Steve Agee<\/strong> (Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em>, and Chukwudi Iwuji\u00a0<\/strong>(When They See Us<\/em>).
\nGunn\u2019s series will show how Peacemaker became \u201ca man who believes in peace at any cost \u2014 no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.\u201d Gunn and\u00a0The Suicide Squad<\/em>\u00a0producer\u00a0Peter Safran<\/strong>\u00a0will serve as executive producers of the series, with Cena as co-executive producer.<\/p>\n
