\n Clearview AI violated Canada\u2019s\u00a0privacy laws by scraping photos of citizens from the internet without permission, the country\u2019s regulators announced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The controversial firm provides software to law enforcement agencies that can match photos of faces to a database of more than 3 billion images.<\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s privacy watchdogs said this creates a risk of significant harm to the public. They noted that people whose images are captured in Clearview\u2019s database could be misidentified or exposed to data breaches.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Clearview does is mass surveillance and it is illegal,\u201d said<\/a> Daniel Therrien, Canada\u2019s privacy commissioner. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is completely unacceptable for millions of people who will never be implicated in any crime to find themselves continually in a police lineup.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The regulators \u201crecommended\u201d that Clearview stop offering its services to Canadian clients. They also want the company to stop collecting any more images of people in Canada \u2014 and delete all the ones it already has.<\/p>\n

However, the commissioners don\u2019t have the power to fine Clearview or force it to leave the country.<\/p>\n

Clearview had already pulled out of Canada because of the investigation. The country was\u00a0previously the firm\u2019s largest market outside of the US, with more than 30 law enforcement agencies using the software.<\/p>\n

Clearview CEO Hoan Ton-That told the New York Times that he planned to fight the new ruling in court:<\/p>\n

This is a simple issue of public information and who has access to it and why. We don\u2019t want a world where it\u2019s just Google and a few other tech companies accessing public information.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
