“#Roush Review: Hail to the New ‘Equalizer’ Queen<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Hello, Dirty Harriet!<\/p>\n

\u201cNow it\u2019s my world,\u201d gloats Robyn McCall (Queen Latifah<\/a>, regally fierce) after taking down three armed combatants without breaking a sweat. The CIA agent turned vigilante do-gooder is The Equalizer<\/i><\/a> 2.0, a role that fits the Queen almost too perfectly.<\/p>\n

Taking over the role once occupied on CBS by Edward Woodward (1985-89) and on the big screen by Denzel Washington<\/a> (2014 and 2018), Latifah is cool and calculated, unflapp<\/a>able even when being waterboarded. Beset by PTSD nightmares from a mission gone wrong \u2014 the fault of craven politicians, naturally \u2014 Robyn is a one-woman demolition squad with an eye for the underdog. She\u2019s guardian angel as beast.<\/p>\n

Just ask Robyn\u2019s first client, Jewel (Lorna Courtney), a teenage waitress and future scholarship student who\u2019s deep-fake framed for the murder she just witnessed, who voices the show\u2019s premise: \u201cWho do you go to when you can\u2019t go to the cops?\u201d For this Equalizer, the mission is personal: \u201cEverybody\u2019s playing chess,\u201d she says, contemptuous of a system that ignores helpless pawns like Jewel. \u201cNobody\u2019s thinking about the living, breathing pieces that we sacrifice along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

The network knew what it was doing by launching the Equalizer<\/em> reboot on the coattails of the Super Bowl, a night when the appetite has been whetted for bone-crunching battle, swaggering attitude and uncomplicated storytelling. Everyone in Robyn\u2019s secret orbit, including her former agency handler-turned-security consultant William Bishop (the expert Chris Noth<\/a>), acknowledges she\u2019s the best, a go-to quarterback for justice who rarely misses a throw.<\/p>\n

And who\u2019s arguing? If looks could kill, she\u2019d be a serial offender.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to give me the mean look,\u201d quips her requisite shaggy-dog hacker buddy Harry (Adam Goldberg<\/a>). Mel (Liza Lapira<\/a>), another off-the-grid helper who\u2019s a crack shot when not tending bar, observes, \u201cI know that look. That\u2019s your \u2018I\u2019m going to do something crazy\u2019 look.\u201d The only one who doesn\u2019t instantly succumb to Robyn\u2019s steely gaze is her entitled, bratty daughter (Laya DeLeon Hayes). Give it time.<\/p>\n

Gender reversal aside, there\u2019s little that\u2019s surprising about this reboot. Which should make it a comfortable fit on future Sundays alongside the NCIS<\/i><\/a> spinoffs. If they can\u2019t stop crime, nobody can.<\/p>\n
