Oscar-winning actor Christopher Plummer has passed away. He was 91. <\/p>\n

The legendary actor\u2019s death was confirmed by family members, according to Deadline<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cChris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words,\u201d Lou Pitt, his longtime friend and manager of 46 years, said in a statement. \u201cHe was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Plummer is perhaps best known for his performance with Julie Andrews in 1965\u2019s \u201cThe Sound of Music.\u201d But he went on to star in movies<\/a> for the rest of his life, notably telling the Associated Press in 2017<\/a> that he never wanted to stop acting. <\/p>\n

\u201cI love my work. I love what I do. And I\u2019m so sorry for a majority of people who do not like their jobs, and can\u2019t wait to retire, which of course, is death. I\u2019ll never retire. I hope to drop dead onstage. That\u2019s what I really want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a 2009 interview, he recalled his friendship with Andrews after working with her on the iconic musical that made him famous to the masses.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very fond of Julie,\u201d he told NPR<\/a> of his co-star in \u201cThe Sound of Music.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s the nicest thing that came out of that film for me. We have a true and great friendship. She\u2019s an extraordinary woman, professional. I\u2019m grateful to the film in many ways because it was such a success. It is not my favorite film, of course, because I do think it borders on mawkishness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid his 2017 role as \u201cScrooge\u201d in \u201cThe Man Who Invented Christmas,\u201d he shared with The Post more of his wry humor on the art of acting \u2014 in both good movies and bad. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe worse the movie, the more fun you have. If it\u2019s a great script<\/a>, you\u2019re into it and motivated to make it even better. When it\u2019s a bad script, you can have fun on the set and get nicely oiled at night.\u201d<\/p>\n

More recently, he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing a 75-year-old widower who comes out as gay in 2012\u2019s \u201cBeginners.\u201d <\/p>\n
