When you hear about a Korean War movie, your first thought probably isn\u2019t, \u201cI wonder who they\u2019re going to cast as Elizabeth Taylor?\u201d But here we are!\u00a0Devotion<\/em><\/strong>, a new movie from director J.D. Dillard<\/strong> (Sleight<\/em>), is about a pair of U.S. Navy fighter pilots who \u201crisk their lives during the Korean War and become some of the Navy\u2019s most celebrated wingmen,\u201d but at some point, legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor pops up in the story as well. And now\u00a0Devotion<\/em> has cast Serinda Swan<\/strong> to play the part.<\/p>\n

Deadline broke the news<\/a> that Serinda Swan, who played Medusa in the short-lived\u00a0Inhumans<\/em> series<\/a> and also app<\/a>eared on Ballers<\/em>, has been cast to play actress Elizabeth Taylor in\u00a0Devotion<\/em>. The movie will \u201cchart the true story of U.S. Navy fighter pilots, Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner, two young men from different worlds. Initiated together into the VF-32 squadron, they are pushed to their limits flying a new design of fighter jet. But their friendship is tested when one of them is shot down behind enemy lines.\u201d At some point, the VF-32 squadron also comes across Taylor \u201cduring their shore leave in Cannes, France.\u201d In other words, it doesn\u2019t sound like Elizabeth Taylor isn\u2019t a main character here. Still, it\u2019s not every day we get a war movie where someone playing Elizabeth Taylor shows up.
\nDevotion<\/em> also stars\u00a0Jonathan Majors<\/strong>, Glen Powell<\/strong>, and Christina Jackson<\/strong>. Director J.D. Dillard is in production on the movie right right now. In a separate Deadline article, Dillard says he was on the \u201clookout for anything with a connection to fighter pilots or naval aviation\u201d for his next project, and that\u2019s when he came across\u00a0Jonathan Stewart<\/strong> and Jake Crane<\/strong>\u2018s Devotion<\/em>\u00a0screenplay based on the book by Adam Makos. The book\u2019s synopsis gives us more insight and even mentions Taylor:<\/p>\n

Devotion<\/i>\u00a0tells the inspirational story of the U.S. Navy\u2019s most famous aviator duo, Lieutenant Tom Hudner and Ensign Jesse Brown, and the Marines they fought to defend. A white New Englander from the country-club scene, Tom passed up Harvard to fly fighters for his country. An African American sharecropper\u2019s son from Mississippi, Jesse became the navy\u2019s first black carrier pilot, defending a nation that wouldn\u2019t even serve him in a bar. While much of America remained divided by segregation, Jesse and Tom joined forces as wingmen in Fighter Squadron 32. Adam Makos takes us into the cockpit as these bold young aviators cut their teeth at the world\u2019s most dangerous job\u2014landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier\u2014a line of work that Jesse\u2019s young wife, Daisy, struggles to accept. Deployed to the Mediterranean, Tom and Jesse meet the Fleet Marines, boys like PFC \u201cRed\u201d Parkinson, a farm kid from the Catskills. In between war game<\/a>s in the sun, the young men revel on the Riviera, partying with millionaires and even befriending the Hollywood starlet Elizabeth Taylor. Then comes the war no one expected, in faraway Korea.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Dillard\u2019s father was also an\u00a0African American naval aviator, and when the filmmaker read the\u00a0Devotion<\/em> script, he says he \u201csaw an opportunity to also kind of tell my dad\u2019s story: even though he and Jesse were separated by 40 years, the parallels were uncanny. I have a lifetime of my dad elbowing me in the ribs while we\u2019re watching aviation movies and telling me, \u2018that\u2019s not what it looks like, that\u2019s not what they say, that\u2019s not what they do.\u2019 I\u2019ve never had a consultant I could so easily call in the middle of reading the script and ask, \u2018by the way, can you give me more background on this detail or that.\u201d<\/p>\n
