\u201cAre you ready to block for Tom Brady?\u201d<\/p>\n

Those are the first words Tristan Wirfs heard after he was picked by the Buccaneers in the 2020 NFL Draft \u2013 and the enormity of responsibility ahead replaced any sense of disapp<\/a>ointment from slipping to the fourth offensive tackle selected in the first round.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a lot being thrown on me,\u201d Wirfs said. \u201cJust those couple words, I was like, \u2018Wow! I\u2019ll get ready as fast as I can.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Brady\u2019s NFL career began just 448 days after the 22-year-old Wirfs was born. If there is a little intimidated fanboy in him from draft night through training camp, that\u2019s understandable. But it\u2019s long gone now that they are teammates in Super Bowl LV.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe messaged me on Instagram and I didn\u2019t open it for like nine hours because I had a ton of messages,\u201d Wirfs said. \u201cI didn\u2019t see it until the next day and I was like, \u2018Oh my Gosh.\u2019 I was scared. The first time I met him was in our facility I almost bumped into him. I almost did a double-take, like \u2018Wait a minute, you\u2019re Tom Brady.\u2019 I called my mom right after and told her I met him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s like the first thing on your Wikipedia page: This guy ended Tom Brady\u2019s career,\u2019\u201d Thomas told The Post. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to be that guy. I remember how stressed I was as a rookie and I wasn\u2019t blocking for any Tom Bradys. I can\u2019t imagine on top of that feeling the accountability as a bodyguard from Day One for maybe the greatest North American sports figure of all-time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wirfs was selected after Andrew Thomas (Giants, No. 4), Jedrick Wills (Browns, No. 10) and Mekhi Becton (Jets, No. 11). Playing right tackle, Wirfs allowed one sack. The other three allowed 21 sacks combined playing left tackle.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t angry that I was the fourth tackle taken,\u201d Wirfs said. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have been surprised by any order we went.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Giants were determined to find a long-term left tackle in the draft and projected Wirfs as a better guard or right tackle who would struggle with the footwork on the other side, team sources told The Post. In one season, Wirfs went from picked fourth to ranked first: No. 11 among all offensive tackles \u2013 20 spots ahead of Becton, with a wider lead on Wills and Thomas \u2013 by Pro Football Focus.<\/p>\n

The Buccaneers traded up one spot to secure Wirfs at pick No. 13.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t know who else was going to move up to get him,\u201d coach Bruce Arians said. \u201cWe had him ranked the highest guy and he\u2019s been nothing but a dream come true for us. Extremely mature young man, great athlete, and he\u2019s done a great job blocking just about everybody they put in front of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anyone not yet sold on Wirfs likely believes one of two things: Right tackle is easier than left tackle, which Joe Thomas says is \u201ckind of outdated\u201d thinking because defenses nowadays will rotate top pass-rushers to take advantage of a favorable matchup.<\/p>\n

Or Brady makes mediocre linemen look really good with his feel for the pocket and quick release.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I heard early on that Wirfs was playing well, I was like, \u2018Of course. Look at his quarterback,\u201d Thomas said. \u201cThen I watched him: It\u2019s not just because he\u2019s blocking for Tom Brady.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s very patient in his pass set, which is something you don\u2019t see with a lot of rookies. He\u2019s got great balance. He doesn\u2019t get over-extended. He rarely gets himself in bad positions. Those are all things you see from veteran offensive tackles, but for him to master that early in his career is very impressive.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
