“#Queen Latifah in CBS revival<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

CBS obviously has high hopes for its reboot of \u201cThe Equalizer,\u201d gifting it with a high-profile post-Super Bowl 2021 premiere \u2014 TV\u2019s most coveted time slot.<\/p>\n

That will earn the series<\/a>, starring Queen Latifah, a huge onetime audience it will never app<\/a>roach again. CBS knows this, of course, but is confident \u201cThe Equalizer\u201d will attract a loyal core audience sufficient in today\u2019s saturated TV landscape.<\/p>\n

That remains to be seen, but Sunday night\u2019s premiere gave us a snugly predictable drama in that formulaic network primetime kind of way. There\u2019s nothing new here, at least not yet, but \u201cThe Equalizer\u201d checks all the boxes, is well-acted with an appealing cast and features a strong lead character \u2014 which should be enough to warrant a decent shelf life.<\/p>\n

The series reimagines the \u201980s CBS series starring Edward Woodward, and the 2014 Denzel Washington movie, with Latifah as Robyn McCall, who\u2019s left the CIA after a stellar career nabbing the bad guys. (There\u2019s an allusion to things going wrong in Venezuela.) Divorced, she\u2019s moved back to New York City, where her 15-year-old daughter, Delilah (Laya DeLeon Hayes), lives with Robyn\u2019s Aunt Vi (Lorraine Toussaint), who\u2019s been caring for the teenager in her mother\u2019s frequent (and long) absences. This isn\u2019t fully explained in the opener \u2014 nor are several other contextual narrative points \u2014 but I expect we\u2019ll learn more about Robyn\u2019s relationship with Delilah, and with Aunt Vi, as the series progresses. (Robyn\u2019s \u201ccover story\u201d is that she\u2019s been working for a nonprofit organization all these years.)<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Equalizer\u201d opens in arresting fashion with the gunning down of a lawyer in a dark alley, an innocent young woman framed for the gangland-style murder. That leads Robyn, who\u2019s officially \u201cretired,\u201d and her crew of sidekicks \u2014 bearded (of course), iconoclastic computer hacker Harry Keshegian (Adam Goldberg) and Melody Bayani (Liza Lapira) \u2014 to a sleazy billionaire entrepreneur.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think you can buy and sell the whole world!\u201d Robyn barks at him, a predictable line that\u2019s not exactly Shakespeare but hey, it makes its point. She then uses her mad skills to solve the case and she\u2019s a tough cookie, with an ingenious ability to work around any potential roadblock complemented by her flurries of fisticuffs, karate kicks, bashing in people\u2019s heads \u2026 the usual stuff. We expect nothing less, and Robyn\/Latifah delivers the goods (without breaking a sweat). It\u2019s a throwback, but she\u2019s \u201cThe Equalizer,\u201d dammit, announcing her intentions to continue fighting the good fight by episode\u2019s end.<\/p>\n

Chris Noth is also on hand as William Bishop, Robyn\u2019s onetime CIA colleague who now runs a private investigation firm in the city. We\u2019ll be seeing a lot more of him, no doubt, as \u201cThe Equalizer\u201d settles into its regular 8 p.m. timeslot on Feb. 14. CBS is really good at this sort of by-the-numbers genre offering \u2014 and, in this case, that should give \u201cThe Equalizer\u201d a fighting chance to make its mark.<\/p>\n
