Keeley Hawes says her expectations \u201cweren\u2019t particularly high\u201d regarding viewer interest in her two-part TV movie \u201cHonour,\u201d which premiered last fall on ITV in the UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t a mainstream subject and not something many people knew about,\u201d Hawes, 44, says of \u201cHonour,\u201d which chronicles the 2006 murder of a young British-Iraqi Kurdish woman, Banaz Mahmod, by members of her own family, based in southwest London. The 95-minute movie, written by Gwyneth Hughes, makes its US premiere Feb. 16 on streaming service BritBox. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe thought maybe we\u2019d get 1 million viewers in the best-case scenario,\u201d Hawes says. \u201cWe ended up with 7.5 million viewers. People learned so much more about the case. At the end of this journey, people knew about the story and had a greater understanding of these so-called \u2018honor-based\u2019 violence and abuse cases. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou hear of \u2018honor killings\u2019; it\u2019s reported on the periphery, but you think it\u2019s one of those things that happ<\/a>ens to other people in other communities,\u201d Hawes says. \u201cIt\u2019s not something you know very much about \u2014 certainly I didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Banaz, 20, had left a pre-arranged marriage, which was violent and abusive, and was dating Rahmat Sulemani, who was deemed unsuitable by her family. Sulemani reported Banaz missing in January 2006 and, three months later, her body was found stuffed in a suitcase and buried in a backyard in Birmingham, 120 miles away. She had been raped and strangled. <\/p>\n

Sulemani was the prime suspect, but as DCI Caroline Goode (played by Hawes) doggedly worked the case, she discovered the hushed existence of \u201chonor killings\u201d \u2013someone murdered for \u201cdishonoring\u201d their family \u2014 and that Banaz had gone to the police several times, fearing for her life, but was ignored.<\/p>\n

Goode eventually brought the killers to justice \u2014 even extraditing two of them back to England from Iraq after they fled the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first thing I did after reading the script was to watch a brilliant documentary [about the case] by Deeyah Khan called \u2018Banaz: A Love Story,\u201d which won an Emmy [in 2013],\u201d Hawes says. \u201cI met Caroline Goode and we had a cup of tea and I asked a lot of questions. We are not similar, physically, in any way \u2014 she\u2019s petite and I\u2019m very tall \u2014 but it wasn\u2019t like I was playing Margaret Thatcher or the Queen since no one here knows what Caroline looks like. So there wasn\u2019t much pressure in that sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hawes also executive-produced \u201cHonour,\u201d which is an end of the business she really enjoys. <\/p>\n

\u201cI had been working on a series<\/a> called \u2018The Durrells in Corfu\u2019 and I executive-produced the fourth and final season [of that shows] and really enjoyed the experience,\u201d says Hawes, who\u2019s married to actor Matthew Macfadyen (\u201cQuiz,\u201d \u201cSuccession\u201d). \u201cI\u2019ve been acting for a long time, since I was a child, and I really felt like I was using a different muscle and thinking about things in a different way. I\u2019ve spent so much time in this business and was thinking about expanding and exploring the idea of producing \u2014 and then I received this script\u2026it ticked a lot of boxes in terms of producing and in playing this amazing woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

Writer Hughes interviewed Banaz\u2019s sisters, and Sulemani, for \u201cHonour\u201d \u2014 \u201cshe really dived very deep into this project,\u201d Hawes says \u2014 and takes viewers on a journey that has far-reaching implications, not only for Bonaz\u2019s family members and Sulemani, but for the London police.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter this case and because of this case, the police are now educated in honor-based crime and violence,\u201d Hawes says. \u201cCaroline is retired now but has dedicated her life to educating people and working with police and various charities\u2026up and down the country.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
