An expose about government corruption around a Bucharest nightclub fire, a look into the extent of the FBI\u2019s surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr. and an exploration of the origins of the disability rights movement are among the documentary films that are advancing to the next round of Oscar voting.<\/p>\n

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science<\/a>s on Wednesday unveiled its shortlists for several categories, including documentary feature, international feature, original song, original score, visual effects and makeup and hairstyling. Titles as diverse as \u201cTenet\u201d (for score and visual effects), \u201cBorat Subsequent Moviefilm\u201d (for the original song \u201cWuhan Flu\u201d), \u201cEurovision Song Contest\u201d (for song) and \u201cJingle Jangle: A Christmas Story\u201d (for score, song and makeup) are in the initial mix.<\/p>\n

Academy Award nominations will be announced March 15.<\/p>\n

The documentary category includes \u201c Collective,\u201d \u201c MLK\/FBI, \u201d Netflix\u2019s \u201c Crip Camp \u201d and \u201c Dick Johnson is Dead.\u201d The competitive list also has \u201cThe Truffle Hunters,\u201d \u201c Time,\u201d \u201c Boys State,\u201d \u201cAll In: The Fight for Democracy,\u201d about voter suppression, \u201c Welcome to Chechnya, \u201d about Russia\u2019s anti-LGBTQ efforts, and \u201c 76 Days,\u201d about the early pandemic in Wuhan.<\/p>\n

The 15 films were culled from 238 eligible titles. Somewhat surprisingly, Bryan Fogel\u2019s Jamal Khashoggi assassination documentary \u201c The Dissident \u201d was not included. Fogel\u2019s previous film \u201cIcarus\u201d won the Academy Award.<\/p>\n

Romania\u2019s \u201cCollective\u201d is also one of the 15 films shortlisted for international feature, as are France\u2019s \u201cTwo of Us,\u201d Denmark\u2019s \u201cAnother Round,\u201d Mexico\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m No Longer Here,\u201d Chile\u2019s \u201cThe Mole Agent,\u201d Hong Kong\u2019s \u201cBetter Days,\u201d Iran\u2019s \u201cSun Children\u201d and Guatemala\u2019s \u201cLa Llorona.\u201d A record 93 countries submitted for consideration. The Korean American film \u201cMinari,\u201d which was controversially nominated for a foreign language Golden Globe, was not eligible in the same category for the Oscars.<\/p>\n

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross could find themselves double nominees, as both \u201cSoul\u201d and \u201cMank\u201d were shortlisted for original score. Others include Ludwig G\u00f6ransson for \u201cTenet,\u201d Emile Mosseri for \u201cMinari\u201d and James Newton Howard for \u201cNews<\/a> of the World.\u201d<\/p>\n

Original songs that made the shortlist in addition to \u201cWuhan Flu\u201d include Janelle Mon\u00e1e\u2019s \u201cTurntables,\u201d from \u201cAll In: The Fight for Democracy,\u201d Leslie Odom, Jr.\u2019s \u201cSpeak Now,\u201d from \u201cOne Night in Miami\u2026,\u201d John Legend\u2019s \u201cNever Break,\u201d from \u201cGiving Voice\u201d and H.E.R.\u2019s \u201cFight for You,\u201d from \u201cJudas and the Black Messiah.\u201d Justin Timberlake\u2019s \u201cJust Sing,\u201d from \u201cTrolls World Tour\u201d did not make the cut.<\/p>\n

Winners will be announced at the 93rd Oscars on Sunday, April 25, which will be telecast live on ABC.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
