“#Marilyn Manson’s sick, abusive world with Evan Rachel Woods<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

In his keynote address for the 1997 College Music Journal Music Marathon, Marilyn Manson \u2014 the goth-metal shock-rocker whose controversial \u201cAntichrist Superstar\u201d album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard charts a year earlier \u2014 took a moment to discuss his inspiration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe character Lucifer in the Bible is to me a hero, because he got kicked out of heaven when he wanted to be God,\u201d\u00a0Manson told the crowd<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Plenty of rock stars pretend to have sympathy for the devil. But sources say that, for Manson, it wasn\u2019t an act.<\/p>\n

More than 23 years later, Manson has been dropped by the music industry after a number of women have accused the 52-year-old of behaving like the devil \u2014 by physically, mentally and sexually abusing them.<\/p>\n

Last week, 33-year-old \u201cWestworld\u201d actress and Emmy nominee Evan Rachel Wood accused former fianc\u00e9 Brian Warner \u2014 Manson\u2019s real name \u2014 of abusing her<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years,\u201d she wrote in her statement. \u201cI was brainwashed and manipulated into submission. I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail. I am here to expose this dangerous man and call out the many industries that have enabled him, before he ruins any more lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

The fallout was swift. Model Sarah McNeilly released her own statement<\/a> alleging Manson locked her in rooms when she was \u201cbad\u201d and forced her to listen to him entertaining other women \u2014 leaving her \u201cemotionally abused, terrorized and scarred.\u201d\u00a0 Actor Ashley Lindsay Morgan, who\u2019s Jewish, detailed instances in which Manson allegedly asked her<\/a> to bring him Nazi memorabilia from Thailand. Shortly after, Manson\u2019s record label and television shows dropped him \u2014 as did the talent agency CAA<\/a>, which also represents Wood. <\/p>\n

Manson released his own statement<\/a>, claiming that the charges \u201care horrible distortions of reality,\u201d as well as noting that \u201cmy art and my life have long been magnets for controversy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Neither CAA nor Manson responded to The Post\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Over the years, Manson has crafted a creepy public persona \u2014 slicing his chest with a broken beer bottle onstage in 1995<\/a> and allegedly sexually assaulting an Ozzfest security guard in 2001<\/a> (the sexual assault charges were later dropped; Manson pled no contest to a battery charge and settled for an undisclosed sum in 2004) \u2014 that now app<\/a>ears to be the same as his private one. <\/p>\n

\u201cI never saw a disconnect between .\u2009.\u2009. the Marilyn Manson that was onstage and the Marilyn Manson that came offstage \u2014 they were just different levels of intensity,\u201d 53-year-old Kurt B. Reighley, who published the 1998 \u201cMarilyn Manson<\/a>\u201d biography, told The Post. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe was very good at sensationalism, but I don\u2019t think he ever misrepresented himself \u2014 and I\u2019m sorry to say none of the things that have come to light are the least bit surprising or shocking to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Using a portmanteau of Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson, Warner formed Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids with Daisy Berkowitz (the late Scott Putesky) in 1989. Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor eventually signed the group \u2014 its name now shortened to Marilyn Manson \u2014 to his Nothing Records imprint, and produced the band\u2019s 1994 debut album \u201cPortrait of an American Family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reznor\u2019s then-mentorship (he distanced himself<\/a> from Manson more than two decades ago) helped put Manson on a much larger stage \u2014 and in his career, Manson has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide. <\/p>\n

But Manson had other goals \u2014 including questioning Christianity through his music and provoking organizations such as the Parents Music Resource Center, which aimed to increase parental control over kids\u2019 musical preferences.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince the 1980s, when people were looking to blame rock music for its effects on society and looking to tame it in some way, label it, contain it \u2014 Manson wanted to push those boundaries,\u201d Theo Cateforis, 52, associate professor of music history and cultures at Syracuse University, told The Post. \u201cThat\u2019s what his whole persona was based upon.\u201d<\/p>\n

His concert presence \u2014 deemed by fans as electrifying \u2014 was also crude, including tearing up Bibles and using the American flag as toilet paper.<\/p>\n

Conservatives despised him for it. <\/p>\n

The American Family Association, a Christian group, held protests outside his shows. In 1997, the association\u2019s Gulf Coast chapter posted anonymous \u201caffidavits\u201d<\/a> on its website claiming that Manson raped a dog onstage, held Satanic services with virgin sacrifices and threw both puppies and kittens into the audience to be torn apart. (The band denied these claims and threatened to sue for libel and defamation, and the group took the claims off its website.)<\/p>\n

Still, Manson remained unwelcome in various corners of the nation. He ripped up a Book of Mormon in front of an Utah audience in 1994, which got him banned from playing in the state. In 1997, venues in Idaho, Alaska, Massachusetts and Texas canceled concerts \u2014 and South Carolina paid him $40,000 not to play there.<\/p>\n

Manson\u2019s lyrics have also included themes of violence, with some alleging he inspired the 1999 Columbine school massacre in Colorado because the two shooters were fans. (They weren\u2019t.)<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, the Columbine era destroyed my entire career at the time,\u201d Manson told the Guardian<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n

Although musicians such as Ozzy Osbourne \u2014 who infamously bit off the head of a bat onstage in Des Moines in 1982<\/a> \u2014 had previously courted controversy, nobody had done so quite to the degree as Manson. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn the United States .\u2009.\u2009. I don\u2019t think you could point to someone prior to Manson where it was really magnified to the extent that it was around him,\u201d said Cateforis.<\/p>\n

Manson\u2019s startling antics also included an openness in discussing the violence he\u2019s inflicted upon women or fantasized about.<\/p>\n

In his 1999 autobiography \u201cThe Long Hard Road Out of Hell<\/a>,\u201d co-written with Neil Strauss, Manson admitted to smashing his mother in the face<\/a> with a glass perfume bottle. Not only did the shards leave her permanently scarred, but Manson said he felt no regrets since he suspected her of cheating on his father. <\/p>\n

\u201cShe just cried, and I never felt sorry for her,\u201d he wrote, adding that he \u201chit her, spit on her and tried to choke her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The inflammatory autobiography also included details alleging Manson and Reznor physically and sexually assaulted an inebriated woman in the 1990s \u2014 a claim that Reznor has repeatedly called a \u201ccomplete fabrication.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

The accused abuser also copped to nearly orchestrating the \u201cperfect murder\u201d in the early 1990s of a lover and former bandmate named Nancy. He enlisted the help of a friend; together they \u201cfollowed her, cased out her house and figured out her routine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was the first time I had ever seriously considered murder .\u2009.\u2009. She had to die,\u201d he wrote of the plan to burn down Nancy\u2019s Fort Lauderdale, Florida, home with her inside of it \u2014 which, at the last minute, gave them cold feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile I didn\u2019t think it was right to take a human life, I didn\u2019t think it was right to deny myself the chance of causing someone to die either, especially someone whose existence meant so little to the world and to herself,\u201d he wrote in the autobiography. \u201cAt the time, taking someone\u2019s life seemed like a necessary growing and learning experience, like losing your virginity or having a child.\u201d<\/p>\n

In that same book, Manson \u2014 who\u2019s now married to 36-year-old photographer Lindsay Usich \u2014 admitted to making rape threats against a woman who refused his and a friend\u2019s advances. The harassment began with daily threatening phone calls for nearly a month, then grew even more serious in tone.<\/p>\n

\u201c \u2018We\u2019re watching you,\u2019 we\u2019d threaten at the height of our spite-masked lust,\u201d he wrote. \u201c\u2018You better not leave work tonight, because we\u2019re going to rape you in the parking lot and then crush you underneath your own car.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

As disturbingly as he allegedly comported himself in private, Manson also lived in creepy settings. <\/p>\n

In a tweet last week, 26-year-old musician Phoebe Bridgers said that when she visited Manson\u2019s home \u2014 whose location she doesn\u2019t reveal \u2014 as a teenager, he referred to a \u201crape room<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n

Manson now reportedly lives in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, where he\u2019s been known to keep creepy items such as the skeleton of a Chinese girl<\/a> and a clown painting done by the serial killer John Wayne Gacy. <\/p>\n

According to a 2015 Rolling Stone article<\/a>, Manson and his fellow scandal-ridden pal Johnny Depp \u2014 Manson is godfather to his daughter Lily Rose \u2014 once tried to buy the gun Hitler used to kill himself. In the same article, Manson noted that he\u2019s \u201cflypaper for damaged women.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also publicly spoken about his twisted feelings about Wood, whom he met in 2005 when she was just 18 years old.<\/p>\n

The pair \u2014 who got engaged in 2010, but split up that same year \u2014 had an on-and-off relationship for four years. In a 2009 Q&A with Spin magazine, Manson shared disturbing details of one of their breakups<\/a>, including calling Wood 158 times on Christmas 2008.<\/p>\n

Every time he did, he said, \u201cI took a razor blade and I cut myself on my face or on my hands . . . I wanted to show her the pain she put me through.\u201d <\/p>\n

He also added that \u201cI have fantasies every day about smashing her skull in with a sledgehammer.\u201d <\/p>\n

Manson\u2019s previous exes have come out in support of Wood, including his first wife, Dita Von Teese, who said in her statement<\/a> that she left Manson in late 2006 \u201cdue to infidelity and drug abuse.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease know that the details made public do not match my personal experience during our 7 years together as a couple,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n

Another Manson ex, #MeToo activist Rose McGowan, tweeted her support of Wood<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Former porn star Jenna Jameson, who didn\u2019t respond to a request from The Post seeking comment, said last week she ended a 1997 fling with Manson because he bit her during sex<\/a> and fantasized about burning her alive.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is a lot. To say the least,\u201d Jameson told the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n

Marilyn Manson\u2019s brand of shock rock may have broken out during a very different time in the music industry, but insiders say the alarming clues were there for all to see.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think what\u2019s come out now, it was all kind of right in front of us,\u201d said Cateforis. \u201cThis guy was really acting in these awful ways, but we are so conditioned to accept the persona of a rock star as a type of fiction \u2014 that people didn\u2019t take heed of those warning signs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no mystery about the kind of person that Marilyn Manson probably was,\u201d added Jem Aswad, senior music editor at Variety. <\/p>\n

\u201c[Manson] comes out of this era where there wasn\u2019t a whole lot of people telling him to hold back. Everything in music was super provocative \u2014 and things aren\u2019t like that now.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Woods\u2019 allegations, the establishment swiftly turned its back on the past-his-prime Manson.<\/p>\n

But even if Manson\u2019s creep show has been canceled, his music will still be heard. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think if you just went on Spotify right now and wanted to listen to \u2018Antichrist Superstar,\u2019 I don\u2019t think you\u2019d have any trouble,\u201d said Aswad. \u201cThey learned their lesson when they tried to cancel R. Kelly.\u201d<\/p>\n
