LA Times columnist Virginia Heffernan is being slammed for a piece in which she compared the \u201cTrumpites next door to our pandemic getaway\u201d in upstate New York \u2014 despite their \u201caggressive niceness\u201d \u2014 to Nazi sympathizers and Hezbollah because they backed former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

The Brooklyn-born writer, also a cultural columnist at Wired, wrote on Friday that her neighbors, \u201cwho seem as devoted to the ex-president as you can get without being Q fans, just plowed our driveway without being asked and did a great job.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow am I going to resist demands for unity in the face of this act of aggressive niceness?\u201d the 51-year-old wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, on some level, I realize I owe them thanks \u2014 and, man, it really looks like the guy back-dragged the driveway like a pro \u2014 but how much thanks?\u201d<\/p>\n

She added: \u201cThis is also kind of weird. Back in the city, people don\u2019t sweep other people\u2019s walkways for nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Heffernan went on to spark a backlash with her comments about Hezbollah, \u201cthe Shiite Islamist political party in Lebanon, which also gives things away for free.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe favors Hezbollah does for people in the cities Tyre and Sidon probably don\u2019t involve snowplows, but, like other mafias, Hezbollah tends to its own \u2014 the Shiite sick, elderly and hungry,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey offer protection and hospitality and win loyalty that way. And they also demand devotion to their brutal, us-versus-them anti-Sunni cause. Some of us are family, the favors say; the rest are infidels.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also cited Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the Southern Poverty Law Center classifies him as a dangerous anti-Semite, much of his flock says he\u2019s just a little screwy and unfailingly magnanimous. To them,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

Heffernan went on to describe an upper-middle-class French family she stayed with as a teen who did not attend the 100th birthday commemoration for Charles de Gaulle, who freed his country from the Nazis.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did have several portraits of Philippe P\u00e9tain, Nazi collaborator, on their wall,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do we do about the Trumpites around us? Like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), who spoke eloquently this week about her terrifying experience during the insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6, Americans are expected to forgive and forget before we\u2019ve even stitched up our wounds,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr gotten our vaccines against the pandemic that former President Trump utterly failed to mitigate.\u201d<\/p>\n

She concluded: \u201cMy neighbors supported a man who showed near-murderous contempt for the majority of Americans. They kept him in business with their support.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among those who blasted Heffernan for her piece was Megyn Kelly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis woman compares her Trump-supporting neighbors, who plowed her driveway, to Nazi sympathizers & Hezbollah & wrestles w\/whether to show them any kindness since she \u2018can\u2019t give them absolution,\u2019\u201d wrote Kelly<\/a>, who left Fox News<\/a> in 2017 following a feud with Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cNote to Virginia Heffernen\u2019s neighbors: don\u2019t plow again,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Attorney Clifton Fels replied<\/a>: \u201cThis is one of the most app<\/a>alling op-eds I\u2019ve ever read. The complete dearth of humanity; the seething, insular, self-satisfied resentment\u2026if a neighbor reads this and doesn\u2019t immediately pile snow on your house, they will continue, admirably, to exceed you in basic decency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another user, @k_andthe_boys, replied to Heffernan<\/a>: \u201cAs a Trump supporter who shoveled my liberal neighbors driveway 2x last week you know what I was thinking? Nothing. I just did it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen my kids saw they fought over who got to help next. Politics aside, I\u2019m a nice person, raising nice people. My neighbors? They\u2019re nice too,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis column says a lot more about your character than your neighbors. I\u2019m very happy that you and your judgmental attitude are not my neighbor,\u201d added @hitaputt<\/a>.\n <\/div>\n
