Messages between Skype users are free, but SMS text messages require payment in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.skype.com\/en\/credit\">Skype Credit<\/a>\u00a0or a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.skype.com\/en\/international-calls\/\">monthly subscription<\/a>. However, Microsoft does offer a free month-long trial.<\/p>\n<p>You can also use the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/google-voice\/id318698524\">Google Voice app<\/a>. Unlike Skype, Google Voice is completely free. However, it\u2019s only available in the U.S. Google will give you a phone number you can <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/voice\/answer\/115116\">use for text messages<\/a> as well as phone calls and voicemails.<\/p>\n<p>Many other SMS apps are available in the iPad\u2019s App Store. These apps usually require a subscription to use regularly, and some of them may show intrusive advertising or might not respect your privacy, so be careful. They operate through the internet to a relay operated by the company that interfaces with the SMS network.<\/p>\n<p>Still, if you absolutely must have SMS messaging on your iPad (and can\u2019t link with an iPhone), a third-party texting app is probably your best bet.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Option_4_Use_an_Alternative_Messaging_App\"><\/span>Option 4: Use an Alternative Messaging App<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you regularly send short messages to friends who can\u2019t use Apple Messages (if they have an Android phone, for instance), then you could also try using a non-SMS messaging solution.<\/p>\n<p>Many third-party messaging apps exist: WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal are three of the most popular currently, just to name a few.
