\u201cOutlander\u201d stars Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish \u2014 two of Scotland\u2019s best-known TV personalities \u2014 explore their homeland in the new travel docuseries<\/a> \u201cMen in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham,\u201d premiering Sunday. Feb. 14 at 9 p.m. on Starz.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re both proud Scotsman and we both wanted to know more,\u201d Heughan, 40, tells The Post. \u201cThe more you dig into it, the more you realize that maybe it\u2019s not as romanticized as it has been portrayed \u2014 but it\u2019s such a fascinating country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Each episode of the half-hour series, created and executive-produced by Heughan and McTavish, covers a different topic. One episode, for instance, follows Heughan and McTavish as they explore the country\u2019s food and drinks in locations ranging from Edinburgh to remote islands. Another installment finds them playing golf at St. Andrews and rugby at Murrayfield Stadium.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The actor pals first met while filming historical drama \u201cOutlander,\u201d which premiered in 2014 and has aired for five seasons, with a sixth forthcoming. Both play 18th century Highlanders (Heughan stars as the dashing Jamie Fraser; McTavish played Jamie\u2019s pugnacious uncle Dougal MacKenzie, who met his end by Jamie\u2019s hand in Season 2).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe both had ideas for wanting to do shows about Scotland,\u201d says McTavish, 60, who\u2019s also known for \u201cThe Hobbit\u201d and shows such as \u201cPreacher\u201d and \u201cCastlevania.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI had an idea about 30 years ago actually that I\u2019d written down called \u2018Clanlands\u2019<\/a> about Scottish history and the clans,\u201d he says. \u201cSam and I came together in Los Angeles having a beer, and we talked about sharing that idea together. Sam suggested a podcast; I pretended to know what that was\u2026then this idea came up. It happ<\/a>ened very quickly after that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMen in Kilts\u201d was also a way for Heughan to dive into real subjects he\u2019d first\u00a0fictionalized on \u201cOutlander\u201d \u2014 such as the 1746 Battle of Culloden (which saw the Scots brutally defeated by the British, decimating Highland culture).<\/p>\n

\u201cShooting [Culloden] on \u2018Outlander,\u2019 I think we did a great job of it,\u201d he says. \u201cEveryone on set \u2014 the crew, the cast, the extras \u2014 wanted to do it justice. But then after <\/em>having played that\u2026for Graham and I on \u2018Men in Kilts\u2019 to then go to the battlefield, it brings it home and makes you realize with a great deal of empathy what happened on that day. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very bleak; a very dark place, but incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aside from solemn moments of showcasing history, \u201cMen in Kilts\u201d has lots of levity as Heughan and McTavish constantly banter and encounter mishaps along the way, including their van breaking down; run-ins with sheep (\u201cthey\u2019re pretty intimidating,\u201d says Heughan. \u201cThey will not<\/em> move\u201d); accidentally getting their van stuck in the middle of a marathon and getting heckled by \u201csome very slim men and women in running gear \u2014 they didn\u2019t like us,\u201d says Heughan; and what McTavish describes as a \u201cnear-decapitation\u201d incident when Heughan was driving a motorbike while McTavish rode in its side-car.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all entertainment. I laughed all the way,\u201d says Heughan.<\/p>\n

The \u201cOutlander\u201d star is currently on location in Scotland filming Season 6, which doesn\u2019t have a premiere date yet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just started,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s been challenging with everything that\u2019s going on right now but we\u2019re very lucky to be here and keeping everyone safe. The weather has been horrendous; it\u2019s winter here so there\u2019s lots of snow but we\u2019re getting there. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe show itself is full-on from the end of last season [when] the family was fractured; the great war is coming and some old friends or possibly enemies of Jamie\u2019s turn up. So there\u2019s lots to deal with.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
