The 2007 meme star, who rose to notoriety with his heartfelt plea for the media<\/a> to \u201cleave Britney alone,\u201d is speaking out as a new Hulu documentary, \u201cFraming Britney Spears,\u201d ignites a torrent of media attention. <\/p>\n

Crocker, now 33, has revealed that he endured a deluge of abuse from internet bullies following the video\u2019s viral fame. <\/p>\n

\u201cMe saying \u2018leave Britney alone\u2019 was never really the issue,\u201d Crocker said Tuesday<\/a>. \u201cMichael Moore said it and no one batted an eyelash.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crocker, who prefers \u201cthey\u201d and \u201cthem\u201d pronouns<\/a>, now says they believe their viral moment wasn\u2019t taken seriously because Crocker was \u201ca gender-bending teenager,\u201d calling the backlash to his video \u201ctransphobic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I said it, I had to fear for my life,\u201d the adult entertainer wrote in a text post<\/a> on various social media platforms \u2014 receiving nearly 18,000 likes on Instagram alone so far. <\/p>\n

\u201cDeath threats were sent to my grandmother\u2019s house. I was already living in the south as a gender-bending teenager with no money or ways of feeling protected.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even members of his own community criticized Crocker for speaking out \u2014 and letting his guard down. <\/p>\n

\u201cLGBT people [were] embarrassed of me because of the way the media made fun of me,\u201d said Crocker. \u201cWhich made them feel I gave them a bad name.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crocker\u2019s followers responded in support of the their admission.<\/p>\n

\u201cReading this actually gave me chills,\u201d wrote @syddnneey on Instagram, where Crocker boasts about a million followers.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t deserve that. You were always right. Thank you for always being unapologetically YOU. We stan forever!,\u201d said @t.kyle.<\/p>\n

Actor Johnny Sibilly (\u201cPose\u201d) added, \u201cVERY VERY THAT. A pioneer in many ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFraming Britney Spears\u201d\u00a0chronicles 39-year-old pop superstar\u2019s\u00a0ongoing conservatorship battle<\/a>\u00a0with her father, Jamie Spears, as well as the singer\u2019s portrayal in the media during both her ups and downs in the \u201cToxic\u201d spotlight.<\/p>\n

In a related Twitter post that recently garnered more than 218,000 likes, @HarryR wrote<\/a>, \u201cThe \u2018Leave Britney alone\u2019 dude was right all along. History will look kindly upon him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crocker ended his statement with another message to Spears: \u201cI hope not only Britney gets the freedom she deserves but that Femme queer people are not tortured in the media when showcasing humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
