“#Scrubs Creator Responds After Hulu Removes Episodes Featuring Characters in Blackface<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence has opened up after episodes of the series<\/a> depicting blackface were removed from Hulu at his request.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lawrence app<\/a>eared on Monday’s edition of Scrubs podcast Fake Doctors, Real Friends and took sole responsibility for the use of blackface on the former NBC\/ABC comedy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He also issued an apology to Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke for putting them in the position he did.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n \"Bill<\/img>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe reason why that word \u2018showrunner\u2019 exists in television is because you\u2019re the gatekeeper, and anything that gets allowed on a show you ultimately have to take responsibility for,\u201d Lawrence said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, first off, super sorry that any of you guys had to deal with any stuff because\u2026 even though we\u2019re all friends and it was a super creative and reciprocal environment, you guys still, at the end of the day, did and were receptive to doing whatever stuff we told you [to do].\u201d<\/p>\n

He did not defend the use of blackface on the show.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt starts with ignorance,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\n \"Bill<\/img>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe almost thought that we had\u2026 a free pass to not have those thoughts [about the history of blackface] back then because we were so f\u2014king proud of ourselves for doing a very diverse show, in front of and behind the camera.”<\/p>\n

“[We had a] great black-and-white friendship that exists as a real black-and-white friendship, a great interracial couple\u2026 It was almost a block of arrogance where we were like, \u2018We\u2019re so good at what we\u2019re portraying and doing and showing that we could never venture into muddy waters.\u2019”<\/p>\n

“And even now, with that same ignorance, we never really connected the two of those things until now. You do the reading, and it\u2019s not any different.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lawrence also touched on the occasional use of whiteface on the series, saying that will not be pulled from the episodes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a big \u2018both sides-ism\u2019 thing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m getting tons of\u2026 \u2018Well, you\u2019re gonna pull that episode where Donald plays Cal Turk and is a white guy and an insurance agent, right?\u2019”<\/p>\n

And I\u2019m like, \u2018No, I\u2019m not,\u2019 because as a white guy, that is not based in any systemic racism for me, or history, or any negativity\u2026 I find that kind of argument to be so counterproductive and ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n

While there is no confirmation the episodes will return to streaming, Lawrence is opimistic that they will be re-edited and added down the line.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTwitter<\/a> is like, \u2018Why did you pull the whole episodes?\u2019 Why didn\u2019t you just edit those moments out and put them back on?\u2019 And I said to one person, \u2018It\u2019s a pandemic. I don\u2019t really have an editing facility up right now.\u2019 I\u2019ll probably do that, but the first thing I wanted to do was get them off TV because it bummed me out personally,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just made me feel sh\u2013ty.\u201d<\/p>\n
