Firestarter<\/em><\/strong>, Stephen King<\/strong>\u2018s tale of a girl with\u00a0pyrokinetic abilities, is headed to the screen again \u2013 this time from Blumhouse. And the film has just cast one of its villains \u2013 John Rainbird, a hitman who works for the secret government agency known as The Shop.\u00a0Michael Greyeyes<\/strong>, who has app<\/a>eared\u00a0Blood Quantum<\/em>,\u00a0Woman Walks Ahead<\/em>, and the fantastic Sundance 2021 film\u00a0Wild Indian<\/em>, will play the character.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll confess that Michael Greyeyes was not on my radar until I caught\u00a0Wild Indian<\/em> at Sundance this year. But having seen that, I immedia<\/a>tely want to see him in as many films as possible. He delivers a harrowing, raw, angry, and tortorued performance in that film that completely blew me away. So I\u2019m thrilled to see him landing more gigs, and I have no doubt he\u2019s going to bring the perfect amount of menace to the role of Rainbird, one of the villains of\u00a0Firestarter<\/em>.
\nThe character is Native American in the book, but when\u00a0Firestarter<\/em> was first turned into a film in 1984, they nixed his Native American background and cast George C. Scott in the role (although they curiously kept the name John Rainbird). The press release regarding Greyeyes\u2019 casting adds that Rainbird is \u201ca relentless powerful man who has been pushed into a violent life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Published in 1980,\u00a0Firestarter<\/em> was Stephen King\u2019s sixth novel. The story follows \u201cA young girl develops pyrokinetic abilities and is abducted by a secret government agency that wants to harness her powerful gift as a weapon.\u201d The government agency, The Shop, also appears in King\u2019s debut novel,\u00a0Carrie<\/em>. The 1984 film featured Drew Barrymore as the pyrokinetic girl,\u00a0Charlie McGee. In the novel, Rainbird becomes obsessed with Charlie and manipulates her into thinking he\u2019s her friend, but his ultimate goal is to kill her.<\/p>\n

The new take on\u00a0Firestarter<\/em> is being directed by Keith Thomas<\/strong>, who helmed the upcoming indie horror film\u00a0The Vigil<\/em>. Before Thomas landed the job,\u00a0Fatih Akin had been announced as the director.\u00a0Scott Teems<\/strong> (Halloween Kills<\/em>, Rectify<\/em>) is tackling the script. Teems will also executive produce, along with Jason Blum<\/strong>, Akiva Goldsman<\/strong>, and Martha De Laurentiis<\/strong>, who served as an associate producer on the 1984 version.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a huge Stephen King fan, and I\u2019m glad the seemingly never-ending wave of adaptations of his work keeps coming. That said, I\u2019m a bit mixed on\u00a0Firestarter<\/em> as a story, but I\u2019m still curious to see how this new adaptation shakes out. The 1984 film has aged terribly \u2013 it\u2019s just not a good movie, folks. Here\u2019s hoping this one will turn out better.<\/p>\n
