Before exchanging \u201cI do\u2019s\u201d, there was something important Jan Oliver Lucks and fianc\u00e9e Zoe felt they needed to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Have sex with other people and film it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Using their iPhones, the bride- and groom-to-be recorded their six-month exploration of polyamorous love. Their probing journey \u2014 to m\u00e9nage \u00e0 trois\u00a0<\/em>or nah? \u2014 is the subject of a new docudrama, \u201cThere Is No \u2018I\u2019 in Threesome,\u201d which premieres on HBO Max<\/a> on Feb. 11.<\/p>\n

\u201cSex can be a performance or an act,\u201d German-born, New Zealand-based documentarian Lucks, 37, told The Post. <\/p>\n

\u201cDepending on who your dance partner is, you change the way you act and dance.\u201d<\/p>\n

After dancing a duet as monogamous lovers for years, Lucks and Zoe agreed that they were curious about polyamory \u2014 a lifestyle that can be defined as sharing an intimate relationship with more than one romantic partner.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNon-monogamy was something that we had on our minds before we started our relationship,\u201d said Lucks, who directs and co-stars in the film. \u201cWe just hadn\u2019t explored it.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the terms of their open relationship, both he and Zoe were free to engage in heterosexual or same-sex romantic encounters with others. They had to clearly communicate the details of their extra-relational rendezvous with each other beforehand and afterward.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lucks and Zoe then had the option to add the other person as a third to their nontraditional fold.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt brought out different aspects of our behavior in the bedroom. We were pushed into new territory,\u201d said Lucks, who previously considered himself a \u201csexual underachiever\u201d due to his lackluster love life in college.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would have an experience with someone else, and then bring it [or them] into our relationship and our bed afterwards,\u201d he continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really enriched our sex life.\u201d<\/p>\n

No desire was deemed too taboo.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The pair tried a little bit of everything, from participating in sex parties to BDSM to watching one another have sex with other partners via Skype. They enjoyed it all. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was so easy to become enamored with the attention and the excitement and the sex and the infatuation,\u201d Lucks said.<\/p>\n

But as the saying goes: You can\u2019t have your cake and eat it, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cJealousy does arise,\u201d Lucks said. \u201cSuddenly, your partner needs you for less things. Now, there are other men [in her life] \u2026 There were certainly times when I would let things go further than I\u2019d felt comfortable with, but I knew we were making a good film,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At one point, Lucks asked a clearly besotted Zoe if she\u2019d be willing to end a burgeoning romance with one of her more enchanting dates. But Zoe was reluctant to walk away from the other lover. <\/p>\n

When jealousy and insecurity became overwhelming, the film project became Lucks\u2019 lifeboat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe film became quite crucial to my well-being,\u201d he told The Post. \u201cI leaned on it heavily in hard times. I knew I had to see this through.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the emotional turbulence Lucks endured during his foray into non-monogamy \u2014 not to mention the toll it took on his and Zoe\u2019s relationship \u2014 he told The Post he\u2019d do it all again.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a lot of self-growth I experienced throughout the whole ordeal,\u201d Lucks admitted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And while his expedition into the world of open relationships and polyamory came at a surprising cost \u2014 The Post won\u2019t spoil the twisty ending \u2014 Lucks app<\/a>reciates the insight he gained into Zoe\u2019s character before potentially walking down the aisle.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also learned a lot about each other, and found out how we worked as a couple. It was quite valuable, figuring it all out before marriage,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
