{"id":175845,"date":"2021-02-11T00:36:12","date_gmt":"2021-02-10T21:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/nyc-path-has-filthiest-air-of-all-northeast-transit-study\/"},"modified":"2021-02-11T00:36:12","modified_gmt":"2021-02-10T21:36:12","slug":"nyc-path-has-filthiest-air-of-all-northeast-transit-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/nyc-path-has-filthiest-air-of-all-northeast-transit-study\/","title":{"rendered":"#NYC PATH has filthiest air of all Northeast transit: study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#NYC PATH has filthiest air of all Northeast transit: study<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/02\/subway-air-pollution-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Riding the subway is no breath of fresh air.<\/p>\n<p>And the least fresh oxygen in public transit across New York\u2019s five boroughs can be found at the entrance to New Jersey, a new study has found.<\/p>\n<p>Air at the Christopher Street PATH Station was found to have 77 times the normal concentration of \u201cpotentially dangerous particles\u201d found in outdoor city air, researchers from the New York University\u2019s Grossman School of Medicine wrote in the study, published Wednesday in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. <\/p>\n<p>Straphangers on the underground platform at Christopher Street are thus breathing in oxygen comparable to \u201cforest fires and building demolition,\u201d the authors offered for comparison in a press release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The MTA, however, says its own testing has not detected any air-based health risks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have conducted previous air quality testing on subway trains operating in our system and found no health risks, however, we will thoroughly review this study as the safety of customers and employees is always our highest priority,\u201d MTA Communications Director Tim Minton said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers surveyed a total of 71 stations in NYC, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, DC during morning and evening rush hours before the onset of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, acquiring over 300 air samples.<\/p>\n<p>While \u201call the systems struggled,\u201d Philadelphia came out on top with the cleanest system, Boston took second and DC third. New York was found to have the filthiest transit systems, with NYC\u2019s subway less dirty only than the New York\/New Jersey PATH system.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Environmental Protection Agency says daily exposure to air containing 35 micrograms per cubic meter of fine particle concentration can pose serious health hazards. PATH stations were found to have 392 micrograms; MTA stations tallied 251.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><!--If the slideshow is embedded in another post type add the inline wrapper --><\/p>\n<p>Long-term health consequences of exposure to these pollutants can include asthma, lung cancer and heart disease, according to the release.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs riders of one of the busiest, and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arently dirtiest, metro systems in the country, New Yorkers, in particular, should be concerned about the toxins they are inhaling as they wait for trains to arrive,\u201d said co-senior study author Terry Gordon, Ph.D., a professor in the department of environmental medicine at NYU Grossman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur findings add to evidence that subways expose millions of commuters and transit employees to air pollutants at levels known to pose serious health risks over time,\u201d added study lead author David Luglio, a doctoral student at NYU Grossman.\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
