But experts warn that more contagious strains like B.1.1.7 could soon dominate and lead to another huge spike.\n                        <\/div>\n<div>\n                                                                        <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this pandemic, public health officials and experts have developed reputations for being very deliberate in language, in an effort to not spark panic. But in recent days and weeks, they have been sounding increasingly loud sirens, warning about the dangers posed by new variants of SARS-CoV-2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Feb. 8, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5ZNu7bu0hF8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto\u2019s medical officer of health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stated that while there is still great uncertainty about how much of the variants are in Canada, \u201cwhat we know is alarming.\u201d In particular, she said baldly, \u201cWe are in transition to a new pandemic,\u201d one <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dominated by those variants, which now include B.1.1.7, first detected in Britain, B.1.351 from South Africa and P.1 from Brazil. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the coronavirus has regularly mutated during this pandemic, what sets these \u201cvariants of concern\u201d (VOCs) apart is the ease with which they spread. The most prevalent variant in Canada, B.1.1.7, is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 to 50 per cent more transmissible<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than existing strains.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0Can two people who\u2019ve been vaccinated hug each other?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past week, the total number of new virus variant detections has more than doubled,\u201d said Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada\u2019s chief medical officer of health, in her daily statement on Feb. 9. (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of these cases in Canada<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost 400 as of Feb. 9, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/health\/coronavirus\/tracking-variants-of-the-novel-coronavirus-in-canada-1.5296141\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to CTV News, which is tracking cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While presenting new modelling on Jan. 28, Dr. Adalsteinn Brown, head of Ontario\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> Table, predicted <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/news\/highly-contagious-uk-covid-19-variant-will-become-dominant-in-ontario-by-march-1.5286476?cache=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the B.1.1.7 variant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cwill likely be the dominant version of the virus in March.\u201d (The Centers for Disease Control also believes that B.1.1.7, which is <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jemimamcevoy\/2021\/02\/07\/uk-variant-doubling-every-10-days-and-could-become-uss-dominant-strain-by-march-study-finds\/?utm_source=TWITTER&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=4472517631&amp;utm_campaign=sprinklrForbesMainTwitter&amp;sh=6fc2e306358e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doubling every 10 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S., will be the dominant strain in the United States by March.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some ways, this moment feels like where we were in mid-March, when medical experts advised governments to essentially shut down society, even though the number of cases of COVID-19 had only topped 100 on March 11. They could see what was h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening in virus-ravaged Europe and knew it was only a matter of time until Canada was hit. Now, they are again warning of a potential danger that could be on a similar scale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0How much protection does the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine provide?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Israel, which is rapidly vaccinating its population, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-israel-results-ins\/vaccine-vs-variant-promising-data-in-israels-race-to-defeat-pandemic-idUSKBN2AA0MS\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is in its third lockdown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, brought about by a massive surge in cases, of which around 80 per cent are B.1.1.7. Like Israel and the rest of the world, Canada is in a race between variant and vaccine, the latter of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which appears to forestall most hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19. Vaccines appear to be winning the battle in Israel, where <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jburnmurdoch\/status\/1357715616053014528?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cases and hospital admissions are falling more steeply in seniors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who are by and large<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccinated, versus younger groups, who aren\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To hold the variants at bay in Canada, a variety of measures have been introduced. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The federal government now demands PCR tests for everyone but non-essential workers who enter the country by land and air; Manitoba <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.mb.ca\/asset_library\/en\/proactive\/2020_2021\/orders-soe-selfisolation-01282021.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requires virtually everyone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> entering the province to self-isolate for 14 days; <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/new-brunswick\/rotation-workers-covid-travel-1.5902575\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Brunswick demands rotational workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to self-isolate for two weeks upon their return to the province for their time off; and in Alberta, everyone in the same household as a person<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who stays home during their isolation after testing positive for a VOC, now has to quarantine until \u201c14 days have passed from the end of the case\u2019s isolation period, or a total of 24 days,\u201d explained <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/release.cfm?xID=77193F1F7DAED-023C-8FF9-3793D844C015FE50\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Deena Hinshaw, the province\u2019s chief medical officer of health, on Feb. 2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0How worried should Canadians be about the B.1.1.7. coronavirus variant?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think some of the limiting movements and creating barriers to people coming in [to Canada] when they are infected\u2026are good steps,\u201d says Dr. Ilan Schwartz, an infectious diseases physician in Edmonton and assistant professor at the University of Alberta. Still, he\u2019s not a fan of his province\u2019s 24-day isolation rule, which he calls \u201cmore theatrics than anything,\u201d as \u201cthe specific circumstance where somebody is living with somebody who is known to be infected with a variant\u201d will likely<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only apply to a small group of people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, Schwartz isn\u2019t sure any specific measures aimed at stopping<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the uncontrolled spread of VOCs \u201care going to ultimately have enough of an impact if we are, at the same time, lifting restrictions designed to minimize transmission of the virus here in the province.\u201d He acknowledges \u201cthis is not purely a scientific or medical decision\u201d and that \u201cthere are a lot of societal factors and political factors at play as well.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>RELATED:\u00a0I\u2019m immunocompromised. Can I get the COVID-19 vaccine?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some provincial governments, including those in Ontario, Quebec and Alberta, are reacting to falling case counts by relaxing public health restrictions, upping the number of people who can gather together <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ly and restarting dine-in eating. On Monday, after Alberta allowed restaurants to reopen, the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CBCFletch\/status\/1359250870286880776?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">number of Open Table reservations spiked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Columbia isn\u2019t following the paths of the other big provinces. On Feb. 5, Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.\u2019s provincial health officer, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2021\/02\/05\/bc-health-restrictions-to-continue-indefinitely.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said restrictions wouldn\u2019t be lifted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, citing her concern for the VOCs: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are in a place of a little bit of uncertainty. We need to buy some time to understand if the positive things we are seeing will allow us to take away some of the restrictions we have in place now, and be able to do that safely,\u201d even warning that restrictions may increase if variant case counts increase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sticking to the existing playbook of public health measures, such as limited gathering sizes, is the course Schwartz favours: \u201cWith cases going in the right direction, if we bide our time, continue with the restrictions that have been very effective so far, then we can expect that the case numbers would go down substantially and there wouldn\u2019t be opportunity for these variants to emerge [as bigger threats.]\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"ctx-article-root\"><!-- --><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
