Eli Roth<\/strong> now has a\u00a0House with a Clock in Its Walls<\/em> reunion ready for his take on\u00a0Borderlands<\/em><\/strong>, because Jack Black<\/strong> is joining the previously-announced Cate Blanchett<\/strong> for the video game<\/a> adaptation. Black will play wisecracking robot Claptrap in the film, and honestly, getting Jack Black to play a sarcastic robot is pretty good casting, no matter how you feel about this movie. The cast also includes Kevin Hart<\/strong> and Jamie Lee Curtis<\/strong>, with\u00a0Craig Mazin<\/strong> handling the script<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Claptrap, a character that\u2019s sort of a mash-up of Wall-E and Deadpool, is \u2013 per the Borderlands wiki<\/a> \u2013 \u201ca CL4P-TP general<\/a> purpose robot manufactured by Hyperion. It has been programmed with an overenthusiastic personality, and brags frequently, yet also expresses severe loneliness and cowardice.\u201d And now the character is set to be played by Jack Black in the\u00a0Borderlands<\/em> movie from director Eli Roth for studio Lionsgate. \u201cI am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth. Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen,\u201d Roth said.
\nNathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, added: \u201cWe couldn\u2019t have been more in sync with our filmmakers and casting executives as we approached this role. It\u2019s one of the biggest no-brainer casting decisions we\u2019ve ever made. Everyone who\u2019s ever played the game knows Jack is perfect for this part. We\u2019re thrilled he will add his endless comic energy and voice to our film \u2013 he\u2019ll bring so much to the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Borderlands<\/em> script comes from Craig Mazin, creator of HBO\u2019s\u00a0Chernobyl<\/em> and writer of the upcoming\u00a0The Last of Us<\/em> TV series<\/a>.\u00a0Black joins a cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jamie Lee Curtis.\u00a0Borderlands<\/em> is based on the best-selling video game from developer Gearbox Software and publisher 2K, a wholly owned label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc.<\/p>\n

The first game, released in 2009, focused on \u201ca\u00a0group of four Vault Hunters, who travel<\/a> to the distant planet of Pandora to search for the \u201cVault\u201d, which is rumored to contain advanced alien technology<\/a> and other priceless riches. The hunters piece together clues to find the Vault while battling the savage wildlife of Pandora and the bandits and outlaws that populate the planet, ultimately banding together to prevent the Atlas Corporation and its privately-funded paramilitary forces from reaching the Vault first.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never played\u00a0Borderlands<\/em>, but I\u2019m intrigued about all of this \u2013 the cast is shaping up to be quite strong. The only thing giving me pause is Roth, a filmmaker whose work I have never really enjoyed. But I\u2019m certainly willing to give the\u00a0Borderlands<\/em> movie a shot when it arrives.<\/p>\n
